The couple never officially broke up.
In a 2021 interview with the Guardian, the pair spoke about their influence on commercial radio and how to achieve greater acceptance of «crossover music» amid a disparaging movement against the disco music style.
“One of the things I don't think we fully deserve is opening up commercial radio to that possibility,” Oates told the Guardian.
“We have achieved early success with black radio — the African American community played as much, if not as much, a part of our success as anything else. So for us it was normal, it was the music that we made that appealed to all sorts of people. I think we've opened the door for more acceptance of what they call crossover music,» he added.
