GROZNY, November 28The Visaitovsky District Court of Grozny interrogated the imams who are victims in the case of Koran arsonist Nikita Zhuravel: they unanimously regarded the young man’s act as a blatant insult, a correspondent reports from the courtroom.
The victims are 13 imams of mosques in Grozny, five of them came to the trial on Tuesday.
«I regard these actions as <…> a blatant fact, a rude and unacceptable action. This offended me in particular, I think it hurt the feelings of all believers. It caused moral harm,» the imam said, in particular mosque in Baysangurovsky district of Grozny Salman Bibulatov.
Other victims also said that Zhuravel’s act insulted devout Muslims and caused them moral damage. Zhuravel, for his part, once again apologized for what he had done.
“I’m terribly ashamed,” the young man admitted in court.
Zhuravel was detained in May in Volgograd for an action involving the burning of the Koran in front of a mosque — as stated in the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation, the suspect admitted that he did it for money at the direction of the Ukrainian special services. The criminal case of insulting the feelings of believers and hooliganism was transferred to Chechen investigators, and Zhuravel himself was transferred to Chechnya. During the investigation, Zhuravel admitted guilt in burning the Koran, but not in hooliganism.
