ATHENS, November 30. Famous Greek writer, author of the bestseller «Z» Vasilis Vasilikos died at the age of 89, Greek public television ERT reported.
«The award-winning Greek writer Vasilis Vasilikos died today at the age of 89. He wrote novels, novellas, short stories, plays and poetry. His best-known works include: The Mythology of America, The Speargun, » «Victims of the World», «Photographs», «Z», «Coroner», «Death of an American» and others. His books have been translated into 33 languages, including Braille,» the obituary says.
His novel «Z» was filmed in 1969 by director Costas Gavras. The film won an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film and Best Editing.
Vasilikos was born on November 18, 1934. After the military junta came to power, he left the country and lived and worked abroad from 1967 to 1994, with a break from 1981 to 1984, when he served as deputy director general of ERT. He was Ambassador of Greece to UNESCO from 1996-2004. Vasilis Vasilikos was a member of the Greek Parliament from 2015 to May 2023.
