The fifth stage of the Russian Grand Prix ended in Samara. Sports tells why Eteri Tutberidze's students failed to win, and in men's single skating Peter Gumennik held the tournament at the highest level.
Gumennik in absentia among world leaders
In men's single skating, the most pleasant result of the day was the emergence of our Olympian Andrei Mozalev from the mud. The skater, who was in seventh place after the short program, was able to recover in the free program and scored a total of 258.69 points. It was just a little bit short of reaching the podium – Alexander Samarin (263.21) eventually snatched bronze, although his skiing was not 100 percent clean, but still a little more reliable.
«
After the end of the competition, Mozalev admitted in an interview that he had fallen into a routine: “There is such a thing. Now at least I changed my place of residence inside St. Petersburg — and already something new, some other colors appeared in life. At least the view from the window is different. More I love billiards, it helps me take my mind off it.»
While some leaders are dealing with internal problems, Roman Savosin, unexpectedly for many, has come to the fore. More recently, he was considering the option of leaving the sport and even managed to start a coaching career in Kazakhstan, but before this season he returned, and triumphantly. The victory at the first Grand Prix stage of the season in Ufa and silver in Samara (288.46) can be called a clear success and a real local sensation. Moreover, Roman had every chance to win in the city on the Volga, but…
“
“I’m happy with my performance and the result. And at this stage Peter is the first.»
We are, of course, talking about Russian vice-champion Pyotr Gumennik. In Samara, this incredibly gifted skater from a technical point of view skated both programs cleanly, scoring a total of more than 300 points. Peter is the first Russian single skater to reach such heights. And in the world, except for him, only a few have achieved something like this.
“
“This is a serious name, a great historical figure,” Gumennik said about his attitude towards his nickname. “I like this nickname.”
But while the men's winner was more or less predictable, the women's were somewhat of a sensation. Eteri Tutberidze's student Daria Sadkova was in second place after the short program, just a penny behind the lead, and in the free program she prepared a large-caliber weapon — a quadruple sheepskin coat. His pure performance would guarantee her victory, no matter how her rivals skated.
True, in addition to the mistake on the sheepskin coat, Daria made another mistake — a fall on a triple flip. In the final protocol, next to her name there are 210.71 points for the sum of two skates — it turns out that the fate of gold was decided not even by the sheepskin coat, but by this ill-fated flip.
“
“It’s a shame for the sheepskin coat, on “I made two good jumps in six minutes,” Sadkova told reporters after the skate. “Flip… I don’t know, to be honest. A triple jump, but I decided to “sit down” on it. It’s a shame. I think it’s all about the mood, in the head.”
Unfortunately, another student of Tutberidze, Maya Khromykh, is unlikely to be able to explain her not entirely successful performances in Samara only with problems with her attitude. After a good short program and an intermediate third place, Maya made a mistake in the free program and fell out of the top three (182.70; fifth place). Obviously, the figure skater cannot yet get into shape, and we can only wish her not to lose heart and find the strength to overcome the difficult period.
How, for example, Ksenia Sinitsyna managed to do this. When she goes on the ice, many fans and outside observers of the competition probably see her as a fragile girl, and not everyone, I believe, at that moment has the thought that Ksyusha is actually one of the most experienced singles skaters currently active. During her 19 years, she managed to go through a lot, and the ups were often replaced by painful downs.
«
“It wasn’t easy,” the figure skater admitted to reporters after the skate. “Thanks to my coaches for continuing to work with me. There’s no complete awareness, it’s a big surprise. I was ready, I had in my mind that I could win. But I haven’t gone to the competition for a long time.” podium, and to win the tournament is generally a big step forward.» trainings — triple axel and quadruple toe loop. Now I would like to see them in competitions!
Clear advantage of Alexander Zhulin's students
The dancers finished the day with style, catchy, but without unnecessary noise. Local favorites Elizaveta Khudayberdieva and Yegor Bazin skated both programs in class, scored 208.99 points for them and beat their closest pursuers in the person of Irina Khavronina and David Narizhny (201.16) for an eternity. However, for the debutants, who are Irina and David, the result can still be considered outstanding. Like Sofia Leontyeva/Daniil Gorelkin (190.39), whose status as yesterday's juniors did not prevent them from jumping onto the podium right away.
