Valery Gergiev became co-chairman of the Union of Theater Workers

MOSCOW, December 4 The secretariat of the Union of Theater Workers (STD) of the Russian Federation included 34 theater workers, including the head of the Bolshoi and Mariinsky theaters Valery Gergiev, artistic director of the Moscow Provincial Theater Sergei Bezrukov, GITIS rector Grigory Zaslavsky, reports the correspondent.
On Monday, an extraordinary congress of the STD is being held, at which new leaders of the organization are elected. More than 150 union delegates are present at the congress. People's Artist of Russia, artistic director of the Oleg Tabakov Theater Vladimir Mashkov became the new chairman of the STD.
“Based on the result of the secret ballot, the counting commission considers the STD secretariat of 34 people elected,” said the chairman of the counting commission, Sergei Morozov. The new secretariat included 34 people, among them both candidates who recused themselves from the post of chairman of the STD – director of the Vakhtangov Theater Kirill Krok and head of the Bolshoi and Mariinsky theaters Valery Gergiev – and other members of the union: artistic director of Helikon-Opera Dmitry Bertman , rector of GITIS Grigory Zaslavsky, rector of the Shchukin Theater Institute Evgeny Knyazev, rector of the Shchepkin Higher Theater School Boris Lyubimov and artistic director of the Moscow Provincial Theater Sergei Bezrukov.

Gergiev was also elected co-chairman of the STD at Mashkov’s suggestion. “To approve Valery Abisalovich Gergiev, our wonderful artist, a great man, full of energy and knowledge of his craft, as co-chairman of the Union of Theater Workers in the musical direction,” Mashkov said. He also proposed renaming the position of the first deputy of the Union of Labor Unions to the position of co-chairman of the union. Also, the issue of changes to the charter of the STD was included in the agenda. The proposals were supported by a majority of votes.

Earlier, Alexander Kalyagin, who headed the STD, said that the entire activity of the union “requires rethinking”, “it is necessary to comprehend and identify all the positive and all the existing shortcomings.”
