MOSCOW, December 8 President of the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB ) Thomas Weickert told Kicker that he welcomes the decision of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to admit athletes from Russia and Belarus to the Olympics in Paris.
On Friday, the IOC announced the admission of Russian and Belarusian athletes to the Games in Paris under a neutral flag, subject to a number of criteria.
According to Weikert, the IOC decision made it possible to clarify the method of qualifying Russian athletes. He also noted the importance of maintaining strict sanctions against Russians.
“Now it is important to consistently implement these requirements,” said the head of the DOSB.
The Olympic Games in Paris will be held from July 26 to August 11, 2024.
In March, the IOC Executive Committee recommended that Russians and Belarusians be allowed to participate in international competitions in a neutral status if they are not associated with the military structures of the countries and did not speak out in support of the SVO. In the fall, the IOC suspended the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) due to the inclusion of the DPR, LPR, Kherson and Zaporozhye regions in the Olympic councils. The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) announced on November 6 that it had registered the ROC's appeal against the IOC suspension.
