After much thought and negotiations, the famous coach Natalya Linichuk agreed to work at the Plushenko's Angels academy. . The Sport correspondent reflects on whether the cooperation will be fruitful and whether the 67-year-old specialist will be able to restart his career by preparing new champions for Russian figure skating.
In early November, while talking with Linichuk on the phone, he made a serious mistake . He said that he and Gennady Karponosov were the last of the top Russian coaches to leave Moscow, and Natalya was the last to return. The rebuke was harsh:

“We didn’t go anywhere! All this time, working in the USA, we were preparing the leaders of the Russian team.”
This is both true and not true.
In an interview conducted in Washington during the 2003 World Cup, Natalya Vladimirovna said something else:
“
“We left for America in 1994, before the Olympics,” she recalled. “There were simply no conditions for training in Moscow. They let us go on ice at the Olimpiysky sports complex. If now in Russia they offer the same conditions as we we have in the USA, we might think about returning.»
The one from whom we had to borrow to pay for the ice rental was mentioned off the record. Although Linichuk and Karponosov defended the colors of Dynamo society and were officers of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. Linichuk herself is a retired colonel.
It is true that almost the entire Russian dance team trained at a skating rink in a small American town in the 90s. It is also true that at the same time figure skaters from Ukraine, Italy, Israel, the USA, Switzerland, Japan, Poland, Austria, and China were training with them. Some on a permanent basis, others came for consultations and dance performances.
At one of the European Championships, journalists even calculated that before entering the zone of tears and kisses, Linichuk and Karponosov changed into uniforms of different teams six times during the two strongest warm-ups. In those years, the Russian coaching tandem, working in the USA, dictated the fashion in ice dancing. How American coaches Marina Zueva and Igor Shpilband, and later Canadians Marie-France Dubreuil and Patrice Lauzon will do this at a Montreal school.
Be that as it may, from 1994 to 2010, the hopes of fans of Russian ice dancing were associated with the students of Linichuk and Karponosov. The exception was Turin, where together with Olympic champions Tatyana Navka and Roman Kostomarov (the duet also managed to train with Linichuk), Yana Khokhlova and Sergei Novitsky, students of Irina Zhuk and Alexandra Svinin, performed. The trainers did not allow anyone into the family business.

“Gennady and I are fundamentally not going to, like some masters, get assistants for menial work,” Linichuk asserted 20 years ago. “We ourselves are successful with everything.” we can cope.»
They didn’t even hire a general physical training coach. Karponosov was responsible for this part of the work, who in the same Washington revealed some of the secrets of the technique. He said that he spent hours at rehearsals of Igor Moiseev's ensemble, watching the work of the dancers, carefully studying the experience of leading hockey coaches.
General physical training classes » according to Karponosov» lasted about an hour before the start of the first ice training. They passed with such intensity that the few spectators who found themselves at the skating rink received real pleasure. The skaters themselves called it “Auschwitz,” and the coaches called it “Gestapovich.” But at the largest tournaments they performed dances in one breath from the first to the last second.
After the scandalous divorce with the division of property in Moscow, it is difficult to imagine what should happen for the reunion of the coaching duo Linichuk/Karponosov. It happens, of course, that after parting in life, specialists continue to work together under the motto “nothing personal, just business,” but this is clearly not the case. Moreover, the last top duet with whom the new coach of the dance department of Plushenko's Angels worked was Oksana Domnina and Maxim Shabalin.
Then Linichuk tried her hand at the academy of Alexei Kilyakov and Elena Novak, where the Georgian duo Diana Davis and Gleb Smolkin are currently training, and Ruslan Goncharov also works. It was she and Karponosov who led the Ukrainian dancer to the bronze medal in Turin. Natalya Vladimirovna also trained with American singles skater Ting Tsuei. Only now not a single dance group can work like the leading Russian specialists at the turn of the century. Specialists in acrobatics, various modern dances on the floor, steps — and so on, so on, etc. were added to the general physical training coaches.
U Linichuk By the time he joined Plushenko’s Angels, there was no team. There is no need to count on former students.

“I know Natalya Vladimirovna’s requirements very well,” said Maxim Stavissky. “I need to work with her with full dedication all the time, without being distracted by other projects. I have a lot of work on the show, there are invitations to stage programs. Constant income is an attractive thing, but it’s unlikely “Will I be able to become an assistant to the last coach.”
Another student, Oleg Ovsyannikov, generally stated that, taking into account all the sores, Linichuk would not be able to help on the ice. And he added that he would watch with great interest how she copes with the duet Arina Ushakova/Valery Angelopol.

According to a source familiar with the situation, the only duo currently training at Plushenko’s academy would like to see Maxim Bolotin, who skated with Domnina before Shabalin, as assistants to the new head coach. It will be difficult to find duets that have already declared themselves for the eminent mentor. There was talk that figure skaters from Ilya Averbukh’s academy could move to the academy together with coach Elena Maslennikova.

And Averbukh’s group itself has existed for about two years. Now it consists mainly of young skaters. For adults, the duo Sofia Shevchenko/Andrey Yezhlov, which appeared this summer, will perform only. In the junior Grand Prix series — the winners of the project «Ice Age. Children» Alexandra Shinkarenko/Vladislav Mikhailov, who transferred from Zhuk and Pork. There is no need to say that by a strong-willed decision of the federation, dancers occupying leading positions in the national team will be transferred to Linichuk, as was the case in 2008 with Domnina and Shabalin.
Alexander Zhulin, who has brought together the whole cream of Russian dance into the group, does not even want to hear the name Linichuk. She cannot forget how she defeated the duet of future Olympic champions Navka and Kostomarov. And Anzhelika Krylova is not going to give her students to her former mentor. Considering that Karponosov is responsible for dancing in the FFKKR, Natalya Vladimirovna cannot count on administrative resources.
Of course, she did not start with ready-made champions. The same Krylova, who changed several partners, trained with Linichuk from the age of 12. Averbukh became world champions among juniors with Marina Anisina, and his duet with Irina Lobacheva also started practically from scratch. Linichuk’s students also include world junior champions Anzhelika Kirchmeier and Dmitry Lagutin. But will a coach who knows the taste of Olympic victories want to start from scratch again? To bring talented youth to victories at the adult level, it takes five to seven years.
Another very important point. For many years now, Linichuk has become accustomed to being the absolute mistress (well, perhaps, together with Karponosov) at the skating rink where her group trains. It is not known whether Evgeni Plushenko and Yana Rudkovskaya will give her such a degree of freedom. Even such promising specialists as Alexei Vasilevsky and Yulia Lavrenchuk, Sergei Rozanov and Alexander Abt did not stay at their academy.
Linichuk’s return to Russia will not be boring. Another thing is whether there will be results similar to those achieved by Oksana Grischuk and Evgeny Platov, Anzhelika Krylova and Oleg Ovsyannikov, Irina Lobacheva and Ilya Averbukh. We will not mention the foreign students of the famous Russian coach.
