New Kia Rio/K3 station wagon: what it could be

In the first generation of the Korean model, in addition to the standard sedan, there was also a cargo-passenger modification. What could it be like today?

Kia Rio was first introduced at the end of 1999. The car replaced two models in the Korean brand’s range: Pride and Avella. In the first generation, Rio was offered in sedan and station wagon bodies, but starting with the second generation, the station wagon was replaced by a hatchback. The newest generation of the car, which was presented in August of this year and received the name K3, was no exception. Initially, a sedan was demonstrated, and a couple of months later a five-door hatchback was shown. We wondered what a station wagon car might look like.

Up to the B-pillar, it is identical to the sedan and hatchback, with all the differences concentrated in the rear. The shape of the side glazing is made in the style of other versions of the K3, and for the sake of economy (which is very important for a budget model), the lights remained unchanged. At the same time, the trunk door opening has been significantly increased by reducing the loading height. As a result, the bumper was made original, and the license plate niche was moved to the trunk lid, which also makes it possible to visually lighten the very massive rear end. In addition, the station wagon presented in the renderings is depicted (among others) in the signature golden color of the first-generation station wagon.

In terms of external dimensions, the station wagon corresponds to the sedan (with the exception of a slightly increased height due to roof rails): its length is 4545 mm, width – 1765 mm, height – 1475 mm, wheelbase – 2670 mm. For comparison, the dimensions of the Kia Rio sedan sold on the Russian market are 4420x1740x1470 mm, the distance between the axles is 2600 mm.

As for the technical part, in the Mexican market (the main market for this model at the moment) K3 offered with a 1.6 naturally aspirated petrol engine producing 123 hp. in combination with a six-speed manual or automatic transmission. There is also a sports version GT-Line with a naturally aspirated 2.0 engine producing 152 hp. and a 6-speed automatic transmission.
