The petrol Porsche Macan is leaving Europe, and the environment has nothing to do with it

The popular mid-size petrol crossover Porsche Macan is forced to leave the EU market due to tightened cybersecurity rules, which it does not comply with. The petrol Macan will be replaced in Europe next year by the all-new electric Macan EV, while production of hydrocarbon Macans for other markets will continue at the Porsche plant in Leipzig.

The Porsche Macan debuted in 2013; the crossover underwent its last restyling in 2021. Based on the results of the first ten months of this year, the Macan became the most popular Porsche model in Europe, where it sold 20,117 units. (data from JATO Dynamics). Sales of the Porsche 911 family in Europe during the same period amounted to 20,058 units, Porsche Cayenne – 18,161 units, Porsche Taycan – 15,934 units, Porsche 718 – 5,670 units, Porsche Panamera – 4,317 units.

Today, leading European media (for example, the German magazine auto motor und sport), citing official Porsche speakers, reported that the Macan will be withdrawn from sales in Europe in the spring of 2024 due to non-compliance with new product cybersecurity requirements. New EU cybersecurity rules were approved in 2020 and are gradually being extended to various product categories. Since July last year, they have become mandatory for all cars entering the market after this date; from July 2024, the new rules will affect all new cars, regardless of their moral age.

We will not talk in detail about the new EU cybersecurity rules here; they contain a fairly large list of requirements, to comply with which measures must be taken at the design stage of the car. To simplify everything extremely, the rules require that the machine cannot be hacked at any stage of its life cycle, including during the production process. For the middle-aged Macan, adapting to the new rules will be very expensive, so Porsche management decided to take the path of least resistance and remove the model from the market. Outside Europe, the petrol Macan will be available at least until 2026 inclusive, and production at the Leipzig plant will continue. .jpg” />

Here in Leipzig next year, Porsche will begin production of the all-new electric crossover Macan EV on the PPE platform – it, of course, complies with all current cybersecurity regulations.

Petrol The Macan is not the only model that will leave the European market due to new cybersecurity rules: according to German colleagues, it was because of these rules that the budget Volkswagen up! hatchback retired early, although it could well have brought money to the company for another couple of years awaiting an all-new electric successor.
