Talks are set to begin over reintroducing wheelie bins to the Premier League.

Howard Webb, chief executive of Professional Game Match Officials Ltd (PGMOL), said the merits of the revolutionary measure would be discussed after it has been approved. tests within the elite game.

The sport's lawmakers, the International Football Association Council (Ifab), last month agreed to test bins at a professional level as part of a crackdown on dissent and cynical abuse. Tests could begin as early as next season and a protocol will be drawn up. to determine exactly how the rugby-style measure would work.

Webb said: “We have set up what we call the Premier League Improvement of the Game Advisory Group, which includes selected clubs – club representatives – who represent all 20 clubs.”

“We meet quite regularly to discuss what initiatives could be considered for implementation within the Premier League. And trash cans are one of those things that we will be talking about, along with some other things.

“And the assessment will be made in this forum and in other areas that we will consult with. decide if this might be useful.

“As a referee, as a leader of the refereeing team, we are here to listen to the game. We're not really here to give any particular direction. But we are here to listen, consult and discuss, and if the Premier League decides they want to move in a certain direction, then of course we will work with them to make that happen.”

    Introducing orange cards?

Sin bins have existed outside of the professional game for several years, and Ifab must decide how they will be used at higher levels of the pyramid.

This will include the need to mirror how players are sent off after 10 minutes in grassroots and youth football, which means simply removing them from the field after being shown a yellow card, or introducing a new orange card into the game.< /p>

This will also include defining exactly what violations constitute violations. covered by the desire to stop any violation that impedes a promising attack, but does not meet the threshold for a red card.

One example given during Ifab's annual business meeting last month was Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini's tugging on England's Bukayo Saka's shirt in the last European Championship final, which only resulted in a yellow card.

Webb also said he was awaiting a decision on whether whether semi-automated offside technology systems should be used in the Premier League next season, which will be implemented at the end of the current campaign.

The measure is set to speed up video assistant referee decision-making amid growing calls for Webb to order a crackdown on slow reviews.

“We are trialling different semi-automatic offside technologies to see how they can have a positive impact on the Premier League,” he said.

“We will continue to do this in the coming weeks. and months, and then a decision will be made, I expect, towards the end of the season.”
