MOSCOW, December 18, Oleg Bogatov. Vice President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Antonio Samaranch, in a statement on the admission of Russians to participate in the 2024 Olympic Games, expressed his respect for Russia and its place in the international movement, these are the first clear words from the IOC leadership in recent times, said the honorary president of the Russian Olympic Committee ( OCD) Leonid Tyagachev.
Inside the Games on Sunday quoted Samaranch as calling the admission of Russian athletes a “painful but fair balance.” On December 8, the IOC announced the admission of Russians and Belarusians to the Games in Paris in an individual neutral status, subject to a number of criteria. The competition will take place from July 26 to August 11, 2024.
“»I know Antonio Samaranch well, and I knew his father Juan Antonio (Samarancha, who headed the IOC in 1980-2001) even better. The fact is that the time is coming for sober thoughts for those people who have come a long way nearby with great athletes and coaches. And Samaranch spoke about the injustice, which in recent years has constantly been a wrong indicator of the attitude towards Russia. He said everything that was in his soul. That without our country it is impossible, that Russia must be respected — exactly that you can understand his words,” Tyagachev commented on Samaranch’s statement.
““I agree with his speech; in recent years these are the most understandable words for us (from the IOC leadership),” the agency’s interlocutor emphasized.
In accordance with the decision of the IOC Executive Committee, neutral athletes and their personnel must refrain from any activity related to the national flag, anthem, emblem or any other symbol of the Russian Federation, the Republic of Belarus, national federations or Olympic committees, as well as from supporting the CBO at any official event or in the media before, during and after the Olympic Games.
