Russia has created new tools for designing Arctic ships

MOSCOW, December 14 An automated system that makes it possible to design hull structures of modern sea vessels 3-5 times faster according to Russian and international standards was presented by scientists from St. Petersburg State Medical University. As the university press service said, the development includes original software for designing the hull structures of large-capacity ice-class transport vessels and icebreakers.
According to specialists from the St. Petersburg State Maritime Technical University (SPbSMTU), when designing tankers with a length of more than 150 meters and bulk carriers (bulk carriers) with a length of more than 90 meters, it is necessary to apply the general rules of the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS), which regulate the requirements for such vessels and rules perform calculations.

They emphasized that parametric design of structures according to these rules cannot be performed without specialized software. However, not a single CAD-CAM system used in the practice of shipbuilding design organizations and shipyards solves the problems of parametric design.

University scientists proposed domestic software for creating ships according to accepted international standards.
As Vladimir Tryaskin, head of the department of design and technical operation of ships at St. Petersburg State Medical University, said, the uniqueness of the methods and software lies in the use of a combination of traditional calculation methods (in the form of verification calculations of general and local strength, stability, fatigue life of structures) and the use of optimization search methods (objective function – mass of the structure).
“”The goal of our many years of work was to create a scientific basis and develop an automated system for engineering analysis and decision support in the design of hull structures of modern sea vessels and marine engineering structures at the stages of conceptual (draft) and technical projects” , – said Tryaskin.

He noted that the introduction of a domestically developed automated system into the practice of shipbuilding design bureaus, which ensures the ability to design optimal structures, will lead to a reduction in the construction cost of the vessel and an increase in its operational efficiency.

St. Petersburg State Medical University specialists named their development CAD-K (Computer-Aided Design System – Corpus). According to their estimates, the development time for a hull project using this system can be reduced by 3-5 times. At the same time, it is possible to ensure a significant reduction in body weight due to optimal design solutions.
“It is important that this software package can be provided to design, scientific and educational shipbuilding organizations for use in practical activities in the design of ship hull structures in accordance with the requirements of the harmonized general rules of the IACS and the training of qualified specialists,” noted Tryaskin.
In the near future, the university plans to complete and connect to the CAD-K system software for preparing and transmitting data for complex FEM analysis of a structure.

It is also planned to complete the creation of software for transferring the results of parametric design to CAD-CAM – systems used in the practice of domestic design bureaus, to expand the range of types of ships for the design of hull structures, which the system can be used.
The research was carried out within the framework of the “Priority 2030” program of the national project “Science and Universities”.
