Donald Trump scored a significant legal victory after the Supreme Court rejected special counsel Jack Smith's request to expedite his immunity claim.
The decision means his trial Mr. Trump's four-count election subversion trial, which was scheduled to begin on March 4, will likely be delayed for several months.
As a result of the ruling, Mr. Trump's attempt to have the case dismissed on grounds of presidential immunity will have to go through the appellate courts.
He took advantage of the decision to send it out. another fundraising appeal.
“I will still have to fight for my rights in the Court of Appeals as the Biden Special Counsel will do everything in his power to expedite my sham trial and wrongly convict me before the 2024 election. «

He called on judges to bypass the appeals court system to protect the original trial schedule.
“An extraordinary case”
“This case poses a fundamental question at the heart of our democracy: whether a former president has absolute immunity from federal prosecution for crimes committed while in office, or he is constitutionally protected from federal prosecution if he is impeached but not convicted before criminal proceedings begin. «, Mr. Smith wrote.
«The United States recognizes that this is an exceptional request,» he added. “This is an exceptional case.”
Tanya Chutkan, hearing the sedition case, rejected Trump's claims of absolute immunity because the actions occurred while he was still in office.
Judge Chutkan, however, also stayed the case until higher courts rule on the former president's claims of immunity.
Mr. Trump's lawyers argue that Mr. Smith's attempt to expedite the immunity hearing was politically motivated.
“He is confusing the “public interest” with a clear partisan interest in ensuring that President Trump is subjected to a months-long criminal trial in the midst of a presidential campaign in which he is the leading candidate and the only serious opponent of the current administration,» they said.
