Mercedes-Maybach and Bentley rival from Nio: ET9 luxury sedan unveiled

The young and rapidly growing Chinese company Nio presented its flagship model ET9, it will hit the market in the first quarter of 2025. The Nio ET9 features a 900-volt electrical architecture, a fully steerable chassis, steering-by-wire, active suspension, and a 707-hp dual-motor powertrain.

Founded in 2014 by entrepreneur William Lee, Nio initially aimed at the premium segment, and has now matured into luxury: the flagship model ET9 will compete in terms of comfort with Mercedes-Maybach, Bentley and Rolls-Royce, and in terms of type, Nio ET9 is closest to a liftback Cadillac Celestiq, but the Chinese new product with a similar two-volume profile is not a liftback, but a fastback, that is, a sedan without a clearly defined third volume, but with a trunk isolated from the passenger compartment.

Overall length of Nio ET9 is 5325 mm, width is 2016 mm, height is 1620 mm, wheelbase is 3250 mm. The standard equipment includes an active electro-hydraulic suspension, capable of raising or lowering the body by 50 mm in a second and passing a speed bump so that the glass of champagne on the passenger’s table does not spill. The 23-inch wheel hubs do not rotate to ensure the Nio logo is always in the correct position. The flattened steering wheel is not mechanically connected to the wheels, but only gives commands via wires, the rear wheels are equipped with their own steering mechanism and can be turned in any direction at an angle of up to 8.3 degrees, the turning circle of the electric vehicle is 10.9 m.

Various artificial vision organs (including three lidars) necessary for the operation of a full-fledged autopilot are integrated into the body of the Nio ET9, while in China autopilots of a maximum of the second level according to the SAE classification are still allowed, requiring constant monitoring by the driver. For Autopilot, Nio developed its own 32-core computing processor NX9031 with a 5-nanometer process technology. The roof of the Nio ET9 is glass, with a longitudinal stiffener and retractable sunshades. The stated torsional rigidity of the body is 52,600 Nm/degree – this is the level of supercars. A retractable spoiler is integrated into the short trunk lid, creating additional downforce at high speeds.

The interior from the driver's seat was not shown at the presentation, since the driver in the Nio ET9 is secondary and the main seats are in the second row: there are separate chair-beds with many adjustments, ventilation, heating and massagers. Each passenger in the second row has an individual multimedia screen with a diagonal of 14.5 inches and a folding table with a mirror, and on the central tunnel there is a common service 8-inch screen and wireless chargers for smartphones; on the floor below there is a refrigerated minibar.

The Nio ET9 powerplant consists of two electric motors: front power – 180 kW (245 hp), rear power – 340 kW (462 hp), maximum total power – 520 kW (707 hp). The capacity of the 900-volt battery is 120 kWh, the range on one charge has not been announced. The maximum charging power is 640 kW, which can increase the range by 255 km in just 5 minutes. In addition, a depleted battery can be replaced with a charged one on a special Nio terminal in just 3 minutes.

Nio is already accepting pre-orders for the ET9 model, but deliveries of ordered machines to customers will begin only in the first quarter of 2025. The pre-sale price of Nio ET9 is 800,000 yuan (10.3 million rubles) – this is one of the most expensive passenger electric vehicles made in China.
