MOSCOW, December 26 The Russian Academy of Sciences proposed to manufacture and send to the Moon two Luna-27 devices with codes “a” and “b”, and not one, Roscosmos is considering this proposal in order to decide on financing, said Roscosmos General Director Yuri Borisov.
“The Academy of Sciences came up with a proposal to make two satellites, Luna-27a and Luna-27b, for reliability and to guarantee the completion of this mission,” Borisov said in an interview with the Rossiya 24 TV channel.
“We are now considering their proposal, but nevertheless, the deadline is 2028. Depending on the choice, one or two Luna-27 satellites, we will decide on finances,” he added.
The Luna-25 station, launched from the Vostochny Cosmodrome on August 11, crashed on the lunar surface on August 19 due to engine malfunction. The engine, when trying to transition to a pre-drop orbit, worked for 127 seconds instead of 84. The emergency commission named the most likely cause as abnormal functioning of the on-board control complex. The accelerometer block in the BIUS-L device (unit for measuring angular velocities) did not turn on “due to the possible inclusion of commands with different priorities for their execution by the device in one data array.”
Next on the plan is the Luna-26 orbital station «, which is scheduled to launch in 2027, and the landing Luna-27, which will fly in 2028.
