BAIC's Arcfox αT5 electric crossover hits the market: almost premium without flashy features

Arcfox is a subsidiary NEV brand of the Chinese state-owned automaker BAIC: it was launched in 2017, but has not yet achieved much success. any significant success in the market. This year, BAIC decided to shake up the Arcfox lineup so that it could catch up and surpass its competitors. The αT5 mid-size 5-seat electric crossover is a potential bestseller for the brand; sales began in China yesterday.

From January to November this year, the Arcfox brand, according to CAAM, sold 18,163 cars in China – this is 90% more than what was sold during the same period in 2022, but still negligible by the standards of the gigantic Chinese market. For comparison, let's say that the NEV brand Aion of the GAC concern sold 400,818 vehicles (+88.7%) during the same period. Arcfox and Aion launched at about the same time and produce electric cars at approximately the same, near-premium price level, but Aion managed to quickly get promoted, and Arcfox did not.

The Arcfox αT5 crossover, which entered the market yesterday, does not have any striking features either in design or technology; its success should be brought by a good balance of price and consumer qualities. Overall length of αT5 is 4690 mm, width is 1936, height is 1650 mm, wheelbase is 2845 mm, ground clearance is 166 mm. Claimed drag coefficient cx = 0.245. Suspension: spring, McPherson type at the front, independent multi-link at the rear. Standard wheels are 19- or 20-inch.

The only electric motor in the Arcfox αT5 is located on the front axle and rotates the front wheels; on versions 520Air, 520Pro and 520Max its maximum output is 185 kW (251.5 hp) and 360 Nm, acceleration to 100 km/h takes 7.5 s, maximum speed – 180 km/h. The battery capacity is 65 kWh, the range on one charge is 520 km according to the CLTC cycle.

The top version 660Max has increased the peak power of the electric motor to 200 kW (272 hp) , but this did not affect the dynamic qualities in any way. Battery capacity – 79.2 kWh, range on one charge – 660 km on the CLTC cycle.

The interior of the Arcfox αT5 has an extremely minimalist design: a single multifunction screen with a diagonal of 15.6 inches is screwed to the bare front panel without buttons. There's no separate instrument screen, but the 520Max and 660Max versions sport a 22.8-inch head-up display. These same versions are equipped with a full range of electronic driver assistants, including adaptive cruise control. The trunk volume is 400 liters, with the second row seats folded it increases to 1546 liters.

The basic Arcfox αT5 520Air costs 155,800 yuan in China (2.0 million rubles in translation at the current exchange rate), the 520Pro version costs 163,800 yuan (2.1 million rubles), version 520Max – 175,800 yuan (2.25 million rubles). For the top version 660Max, the manufacturer asks 199,800 yuan (2.56 million rubles).

The Arcfox brand is not yet officially represented on the Russian market, but its models periodically pop up in the showrooms of gray dealers.
