DONETSK, January 1Ukrainian troops fired 17 shells of 155 mm caliber at Gorlovka and Donetsk, the DPR representative office at the Joint Center for Control and Coordination of Issues Related to War Crimes of Ukraine (JCCC) reported.
«Shelling was recorded from the AFU in the direction: 18.05 — the settlement of Dzerzhinsk — the settlement of Gorlovka (Nikitovsky district): three shells with a caliber of 155 millimeters were fired … 18.50 — the settlement of Zhelannye Second — Donetsk (Petrovsky and Kirovsky districts): fired three shells with a caliber of 155 millimeters …18.55 — the village of Zhelannye Second — Donetsk (Petrovsky district): three shells with a caliber of 155 millimeters were fired,” the representative office reports in its Telegram channel.
The mission also reported that at 18.45 four 155 mm caliber shells were fired at Gorlovka (Tsentralno-Gorodskoy district), and at 19.10 four more 155 mm caliber shells were fired at the same area of Gorlovka.
Gorlovka is located 50 kilometers north of Donetsk, the city is home to the Stirol chemical concern and coal mining enterprises. This is one of the largest populated areas of the DPR; before the start of the conflict in Donbass, the population of Gorlovka numbered more than 250 thousand people.
155mm artillery is used by NATO countries. The United States has supplied Ukraine with long-range howitzers M777 of 155 mm caliber; Ukrainian troops are actively using them to shell the cities of the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics. Also, the Ukrainian troops were supplied with German PzH 2000 self-propelled artillery mounts, Polish Krab self-propelled guns and French CAESAR self-propelled guns using shells of this caliber.
