    From Roerich to the Soviet garage: what exhibitions you need to visit

    Ballet performances by Sergei Diaghilev, archaeological excavations in search of ancient Russian art, management of a magazine, meeting with Leo Tolstoy, passion for Japanese motifs… During his long life, Nicholas Roerich proved himself as a painter, set designer, writer , traveler and philosopher. It is not for nothing that the Indians awarded him the title of Maharishi, which means “great sage” in Sanskrit.

    The curators of the exhibition showed different facets of the master’s creativity. The exhibition includes more than a hundred paintings – from the early colorful “Overseas Guests” to the meditative “Shadow of the Teacher. Tibet” of the Indian period.

    The central work is a huge set for the production of Diaghilev’s “Polovtsian Dances”. In 2021, she was returned from abroad to Moscow. For several decades, the theater backdrop stood rolled onto a shaft and required restoration. The first part of the restoration work was completed.

    “Alexey Shchusev. 150” in the Museum architecture

    In 2024, the 150th anniversary of the birth of Alexei Shchusev is celebrated. In honor of this event, the Museum of Architecture opened a grand exhibition: more than 200 projects are presented on display. Among the master's most famous works are the Lenin Mausoleum, the Kazansky railway station, the Moscow Hotel, the facade of the state security building on Lubyanka and the Komsomolskaya metro station. During World War II, Shchusev was engaged in the restoration of destroyed cities and, according to one legend, even received a heart attack after seeing the ruins of Veliky Novgorod.

    “Working directly with his creative materials, with design graphics, we see that there is simply an unquenchable creative temperament and a constant desire to design. This is Shchusev’s main professional attitude: he creates a world for people,” says the director of the State Scientific Research Museum of Architecture named after A. V. Shchuseva Natalya Shashkova.
    Visitors will also see archival photographs, letters, documents, models and personal belongings of the master.

    “The Art of MANGA” at Winzavod

    Manga is one of the most popular segments of Japanese popular culture. This type of comics originated in the 12th century. There are original stories (“Stray Dogs Prose”, “Shaman King”) and parts of media franchises (“Pokemon”, “Sailor Moon”). Thanks to the development of digital reading apps in recent years, the genre has experienced a boom, with both children and adults reading comics.
    The exhibition “The Art of MANGA” was triumphantly held in St. Petersburg – in 2023 it was visited by more than 120 thousand people. Now it is available to the capital’s audience. The organizers collected more than 200 exhibits from different times: the first editions of the “god of manga” Osamu Tezuka, Japanese prints, modern works, sculptures. Adaptations of plots from world literature deserve special attention – for example, “Les Miserables” by Victor Hugo or “The Brothers Karamazov” by Fyodor Dostoevsky.

    “Spanish Collection” in the Pushkin Museum

    “Spanish Collection” is a joint project of the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts and the State Hermitage. The largest Russian museums have united to show the works of the most famous Spanish artists of the 16th-19th centuries: El Greco, Diego Velazquez, Francisco de Zurbaran, Jusepe de Ribera, Esteban Murillo and others. In total, more than 50 works are presented – from mannerism to impressionism. The exhibition concludes with Pablo Picasso's painting “The Old Jew with a Boy” from 1903, in which visitors will find parallels with the art of the Old Masters.
    You can continue the tour at the Gallery of European and American Art of the 19th-20th centuries, located in the adjacent building. On the same dates, the exhibition “Images of Spain” is held there, dedicated to Spanish subjects and motifs in Russian painting.

    “I'll buy a garage” at the Museum of Moscow

    For Soviet people, the garage is a kind of sacred space. Here you can hide after the bustle of work, spend hours sorting through parts of the Zaporozhets, store cucumbers preserved at the dacha and an old bicycle. The curators of the exhibition at the Museum of Moscow spoke about how garages became a space for self-expression.
    The exhibition consists of several thematic zones: “A showcase where there is no garage. Official images of happiness”, “Private garage. Background”, “Infinity of perspective”, “For those who have something to cherish”, “For those who can fix everything”, “For those who create”, “For those who know how to make money”, “For those who know how to live”, “For those who cannot yet”, “For those who are supposed to”.

    Interactive installations in the halls coexist with mini-labyrinths, and objects of Soviet everyday life coexist with VAZ-2103, Moskvich-407, ZAZ-966 Zaporozhets cars, provided by the Moscow Transport Museum.
