DONETSK, January 3 Ukrainian troops fired 28 NATO shells of 155 mm caliber on Wednesday into the Petrovsky district of Donetsk, Gorlovka and Makeevka, the representative office reported on the Telegram channel DPR at the Joint Center for Control and Coordination of Issues Related to War Crimes of Ukraine (JCCC).
“Shelling was recorded from the Ukrainian Armed Forces (Armed Forces of Ukraine – ed.) in the direction: 12.30 – the settlement of Dzerzhinsk – the settlement of Gorlovka (Tsentralno-Gorodskoy and Nikitovsky districts): four shells with a caliber of 155 millimeters were fired; 12.40 – the settlement of Dzerzhinsk – the settlement Gorlovka (Nikitovsky district): three shells with a caliber of 155 millimeters were fired; 12.50 – the settlement of Dzerzhinsk – the settlement of Gorlovka (Nikitovsky and Tsentralno-City districts): four shells with a caliber of 155 millimeters were fired,” the representative office said in a statement.
From 13.15 to 13.25, the Ukrainian Armed Forces shelled the Petrovsky district of Donetsk, Gorlovka and Makeevka, firing a total of 17 shells from “NATO” artillery at them.
Petrovsky district is located on the western outskirts of Donetsk, it is the most distant part of the city from the center.
Gorlovka is located 50 kilometers north of Donetsk, the city is home to the Stirol chemical concern and coal mining enterprises. This is one of the largest populated areas of the DPR; before the start of the conflict in Donbass, the population of Gorlovka numbered more than 250 thousand people.
Makeevka is a satellite city of Donetsk, adjacent to it from the northeast. In 2014, the population of Makeyevka numbered about 350 thousand people.
155mm artillery is used by NATO countries. The United States supplied Ukraine with long-range howitzers M777 of 155 mm caliber, Ukrainian troops are actively using them to shell the cities of the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics. Also, the Ukrainian troops were supplied with German PzH 2000 self-propelled artillery mounts, Polish Krab self-propelled guns and French CAESAR self-propelled guns using shells of this caliber.
