The German manufacturer decided to begin mass production of an affordable “green” hatchback a year later than originally planned.
Volkswagen continues to invest in the development of its all-green ID family, its first child being the compact five-door hatchback ID.3, which debuted in September 2019 (it went on sale in the fall of 2020). Then the ID.4 crossover, its coupe-like version ID.5, and the ID electric van were added to the global lineup. Buzz and liftback ID.7. In the future, the family will be expanded, including by the compact hatchback Volkswagen ID.2.

It was previously reported that production of VW's new small electric hatch will begin in 2025. However, now the German publication Auto Motor und Sport reports that it has been decided to postpone the start date of mass production of the five-door to 2026. It is possible that the German manufacturer was prompted to take this step by the demand for the brand’s electric vehicles, which did not meet the group’s expectations. Let us remember that last year the concern had to temporarily shut down several of its factories producing electric cars.
At the same time, the publication's sources claim that the decision to postpone the launch of the Volkswagen ID.2 into series for about a year is due to the easing of Euro environmental standards 7. This is expected to legally extend the life of internal combustion engine cars in Europe (probably the Golf in this particular case): they can both be produced and sold longer.

It is reported that the EU had to give in to pressure from several car-producing countries, as a result, at the end of last year the planned Euro 7 environmental standards were softened. Moreover, now the new standard for vehicle exhaust emissions is almost identical to the current Euro 6. As a compromise, stricter rules regarding pollutants in the exhaust gases of buses and trucks were left in place, and it is also planned to tighten the standards for the content of harmful particles in brakes and tires for passenger cars.< br />

According to the German publication, Volkswagen will show the production version of the electric car, created on the basis of the ID.2 all concept, which debuted in March last year, in 2025. A little later, but in the same year, small-scale production of the new product will probably begin, but full-scale assembly will be shifted to next year. It is possible that the launch of the cross-version, the prototype of which was the announced ID.2 all SUV show car (so far the manufacturer has published only a sketch), will be postponed to the same date.

Based on Volkswagen ID concept . 2all there is a simplified version of the platform — MEB Entry. It was equipped with a single 226-horsepower electric motor located on the front axle. This five-door car takes less than seven seconds to accelerate from zero to “hundreds”, and its top speed is limited to 160 km/h. The capacity of the traction battery is not disclosed, but it is known that the range on one charge of this hatchback is about 450 km (when calculated using the WLTP cycle).
It was previously reported that the starting price of the commercial version of the hatchback, based on the ID.2 all show car, should be around 25,000 euros.
