In the Egyptian city of El Bahnasa For the first time, an ancient burial place with more than 20 mummies was discovered. The portal Sada al-Balad writes about this.
A burial about 2 thousand years old was discovered by Spanish archaeologists. There were 23 mummies in total, they were buried during the reign of the Ptolemaic dynasty (305 — 30 BC) and Roman rule in Egypt (30 BC — 395 AD).
The burials were a well dug in the ground and lined with stone. Two mummies had golden tongues in their mouths. There were also several empty sarcophagi.
Archaeologists said that the tradition of placing a gold plate in the shape of a tongue in the mouth of the deceased appeared precisely during the period of Roman rule. Near the burial they found the remains of a wall with paintings in the form of animals, birds, fruits and berries, as well as a terracotta figurine of the goddess Isis.
