A new crossover is preparing for its debut: first image of smart #5

Its range on a single charge is expected to be about 600 km. This minivan may enter the European market in 2025.

The smart brand, originally founded by the German concern Daimler (now Mercedes-Benz Group), celebrated its 25th anniversary last year. Now the development of the brand’s cars is carried out by Geely (the Germans are responsible for the design), and China has become the main market for the “smart” brand. Although smart does not forget about Europe, where it continues to fight for buyers with Mini. In the fall of 2023, the brand announced several new products, one of them will be the smart #5 family crossover.

The brand’s current lineup includes a couple of completely “green” models: the first-born after the “relaunch” was the subcompact crossover smart #1, presented in April 2022. The second model is the larger coupe-shaped crossover smart #3; Both are based on Geely's modular SEA platform. In the future, the line will be replenished with the smart #2 compact, as well as, probably, the small smart #4 hatchback and the brand’s largest model – the spacious “elevated” smart #5 minivan.

It is expected that the third new product of the returning brand will be a minivan; its premiere will take place in 2024 (probably at the Beijing Motor Show), and sales on the European market may start in 2025. Previously, the future electric crossover has already been captured by spy photographers; the prototype was spotted testing in China.

There is no official information about what smart #5 will look like yet. The designer of the Spanish publication Motor.es offers his own version of the potential appearance of a “raised” minivan. Judging by the render, the new product will have an appearance in the style of current models: with similar head optics, a raised hood, the shape of a large air intake integrated into the lower part of the front bumper and received a chrome edging.

The crossven also has traditional exterior mirrors with black housings, roof rails, “recessed” door handles, black central roof pillars, a body kit around the perimeter bodies made of unpainted plastic, noticeable linings on the wheel arches.

In the salon you can see a large tablet that acts as a touchscreen for the multimedia system. The new product will receive either two or three rows of seats; in the first case, the model assumes five, in the second – seven riders. It is expected that its dimensions will be close to those of the Mercedes-Benz EQB. Let us remind you that its length is 4685 mm, width – 1835 mm, height – 1705 mm; the distance between the axles is 2829 mm.

According to preliminary data, the new product will share the engine range with two current models of the brand. This means that smart #5 will have versions with both a single 272-horsepower electric motor located on the rear axle, and with a dual-motor power plant, the total output of which will be 428 hp. It is expected that the model will be equipped with a larger capacity traction battery, and its range without recharging will be about 600 km. It will take about 15 minutes to recharge the battery from 10 to 80%.
