St. PETERSBURG, January 8, Dmitry Edigarev. The passing of the 1974 world football champion, German Franz Beckenbauer, is a colossal loss for world football, said Vyacheslav Koloskov, honorary president of the Russian Football Union (RFU).
The former athlete died on Sunday at the age of 78.
“”I knew Beckenbauer for a long time. Everyone considered him to be among the elite of football, which, in addition to him, included Pele, Bobby Charlton and Eusebio. Franz was the first central defender who actively joined the attack. He became a revolutionary in the field of defender play “I treated him well, and in return he treated me and the Russians well. I remember that he always had a smile on his face and called me “Totoro.” A colossal loss for world football,” Koloskov said.
In addition to the World Cup, Beckenbauer won Euro 1972. As part of Bayern Munich, the defender won the German championship four times and won the European Champions Cup three times (the modern name is the Champions League). Beckenbauer is a two-time Ballon d'Or winner.
