NOVOSIBIRSK, January 17 Three sets of key equipment for delivering synchrotron radiation to the experimental station (frontends) were manufactured in Novosibirsk as part of the Siberian Ring Photon Source project ( SKIF), the correspondent reports.
The frontend is a set of equipment for outputting synchrotron radiation from the main storage ring to the experimental station. As part of the first stage, it is planned to create six experimental stations of the collective use center «SKIF», for all of them frontends are designed and manufactured by the Design and Technological Institute of Scientific Instrumentation of the SB RAS (KTI NP SB RAS).
“SKIF is a large ring accelerator. Inside, in its vacuum chamber, a beam of electrons moves, which, turning tangentially, emits a very narrow thin beam of synchrotron radiation. In this vacuum metal chamber of a rather complex shape, you need to make holes and make sure that this beam reaches tens of meters to the experimental station. The functions of this beam output are carried out by these rather complex devices — frontends,” Evgeny Levichev, director of the SKIF Center for Use, told reporters.
He noted that in a very short time, specialists from KTI NP SB RAS made devices of very good quality. Levichev has no doubt that the experience gained in Novosibirsk will be in demand for creating similar frontends in other regions of Russia, for example, at the Kurchatov Institute and on Russky Island.

Stanislav Shakirov, acting director of KTI NP SB RAS, said that in the process of manufacturing frontends it was necessary to engage in import substitution, but in the end the task was successfully completed. According to him, the first three devices (for the first three stations) are already ready, three more frontends will be assembled before the summer of this year for subsequent installation on SKIF.
“When we were designing, we were counting on one set, an imported one, but then it turned out that it was impossible to buy it. The designers sometimes redrew it two or three times… We had to do something ourselves. Accordingly, it was necessary to modernize production. They modernized it for 45 million rubles. At our own expense, we bought new machines, bought a unique thing — a vacuum furnace… We had to replace a lot of imports,” he said.
The shared use center «Siberian Ring Photon Source» — a source of synchrotron radiation (SR) of the «4+» generation and an energy of 3 GeV is being created within the framework of the national project «Science and Universities». It will allow you to study matter at the atomic level and gain new fundamental knowledge in the field of biology, chemistry, medicine and other fields of science. At the time of launch, the brightness of the SKIF synchrotron radiation will be a world record. Completion of construction, installation and commissioning work is scheduled for December 2024.
