WASHINGTON , January 19The American Peregrine spacecraft completed its work after a flight to the Moon that was not completed due to a breakdown, the manufacturing company Astrobotic reported.
It was previously reported that Peregrine will enter the Earth's atmosphere over the South Pacific Ocean at approximately 16.00 on January 18 (00.00 Moscow time on January 19).
“As expected, Astrobotic lost telemetry with the Peregrine spacecraft at approximately 15:50 Eastern Time,” the company reported on social media X.
It is noted that the device entered the atmosphere over the waters of the Pacific Ocean at 16.04 (Eastern time). However, the company is still awaiting confirmation from the government.
The Peregrine probe launched from Earth on January 8 on a Vulcan launch vehicle. It was scheduled to land on the Moon on February 23 and deliver five NASA scientific instruments, as well as a number of other research and symbolic payloads. Among them were the ashes and DNA images of earthlings, the delivery of which, despite the objections of indigenous peoples of the United States, was organized by a private company that sells “space” burial services.
Problems with the probe became known a few hours after launch: the Astrobotic company, which built it under a contract with NASA, reported problems in the spacecraft’s propulsion system and a subsequent fuel leak. Due to an emergency situation, Peregrine's landing on the Moon was canceled, and after a week of its flight, the company decided to end the mission with a controlled insertion of the probe into the Earth's atmosphere.
Peregrine was part of NASA's effort to secure the US return to the Moon using private contractors as part of the Artemis program. The contract for its creation was estimated at $108 million. In addition to Peregrine, the Astrobotic company, also under a contract with NASA, is building a more capacious Griffin lander; its launch to the Earth’s satellite was previously announced for the end of this year.
