MOSCOW, January 19. The pre-premiere screening of the documentary film “Steamboat of Time” and a creative meeting with the creators of the film took place at the Rossiya Segodnya MIA. The first spectators were students of pedagogical universities and colleges.
The documentary film «The Time Steamer», created based on the results of unique underwater research using 3D technologies, tells the story of the century and a half history of the ship «Valamon luostari» («Valaam Monastery»), found in 2017 at the bottom of Lake Ladoga. The steamship was sunk in Nikon Bay on January 22, 1940 during the Soviet-Finnish War (known as the Winter War, 1939-1940).
As noted by the head of the project “Time Steamboat “Valaam Monastery”, which is being implemented with the support of the Presidential Fund for Cultural Initiatives, General Director of the Oryol diving club “Divo” Sergei Kulikov, the finds made during the expeditions are of great historical significance. “We wanted to share these findings with ordinary viewers, primarily with students who will replace us and continue underwater research,” he added, emphasizing that “all great things begin with a dream.”
At the same time, in his opinion, it is now quite difficult to attract the attention of young people to documentary films. That is why the project team tried to use new 3D imaging technologies, in which a steamship found at the bottom “literally comes to life.” According to him, today many Russian universities have already expressed interest in publicly showing the documentary film, because it “not only tells about the history of the ship, but also shows the Valaam Monastery through its history.”
The divers who participated in the project noted the high safety of the find. They explained this by the low temperatures of Lake Ladoga, where even in summer the temperature at the bottom does not exceed 7-8℃. “This is an underwater refrigerator,” said Sergei Kulikov, adding that divers even found a bottle of milk on the ship and brought it to the surface (“the analysis showed a fat content of 4.6 percent”).

Monastery press secretary Mikhail Shishkov emphasized that the project was blessed by the monastery’s abbot, Bishop Pankratiy. “The film sets a very correct direction — the manifestation of man on Valaam. Nobody just appears on Valaam, everything happens here “from above,” he said, adding that “Valaam lights up hearts, people dream of returning here, and this disease has already received a name «Valaamka».
According to him, no one had studied the history of the fleet of the Valaam Monastery before, and to establish the historical facts associated with the unique find, it was necessary to carry out work in the archives of the New Valaam Monastery in Finland.
He recalled that the history of the project itself began with the search for bells lost during the evacuation from St. Nicholas Monastery in 1940. “They were put on ice; most likely they drowned,” said the press secretary.
The head of the diving club assured that the search for the bells will continue this year. In addition, according to him, there are flooded piers under the water of Lake Ladoga, and the next project of divers could be the “Pharms of Time” project.
