“Sergiev Posad is one of the oldest cities in Russia, the history of which is carefully preserved by the Sergiev Posad Museum-Reserve. At one time, the great Russian scientist Dmitry Sergeevich Likhachev called the museum the “Hermitage of Russian culture.” A significant number of unique works in the museum collection reflect important layers of Russian national culture and Russian statehood,” the press service quotes the director of the department of museums and external relations, Elena Kharlamova.
The ministry noted that the corresponding decree on awarding federal status to the museum-reserve was signed by the Chairman of the Government of the Russian Federation, Mikhail Mishustin.
The Ministry of Culture added that the museum’s stock collection numbers about 200 thousand items and includes collections of works of art and historical monuments of Russian art of the 11th – early 20th centuries, one of the best collections of folk and decorative and applied art of the 17th century in Russia – XXI centuries, fine arts of the XX – XXI centuries, as well as archeology and local history.
«The Sergiev Posad Museum-Reserve is one of the rare Russian museums, the nature of the collections of which shows a close connection with the history of the Fatherland, the famous monastery consecrated in the name of St. Sergius of Radonezh, and the ancient city of Sergiev Posad, which grew up around monastery of the Holy One,” the department clarified.
