MOSCOW, January 22, Oleg Bogatov. Russian Ian Nepomnyashchy in won in beautiful style against Nodirbek Abdusattorov from Uzbekistan and has a good chance of winning the tournament taking place in Wijk aan Zee (Netherlands), said Sergei Smagin, vice-president of the Russian Chess Federation.
Nepomniachtchi beat Abdusattorov with white pieces on Sunday and scored 4.5 points out of eight. The grandmaster shares 4th-7th places with Abdusattorov, Vidit Santosh Gujrati and Rameshbabu Pragnanandha (both from India). At the top of the table are Dommaraju Gukesh (India), Anish Giri (Netherlands) and Alireza Firouzja (France), who have 5 points each. The competition with the participation of 14 grandmasters will end on January 28.
“»One gets the impression that if someone is a serious irritant for Ian, then he plays much stronger and more confidently. And such an irritant for him was the tournament leader Nodirbek Abdusattorov, who, by the way, acted very well before this round. Ian played the game very enterprisingly and took advantage of the slightest inaccuracies of his opponent. He kept his opponent on his toes all the time in a position where he had to work a lot, and won an excellent game. I think it was Jan's best game at the Wijk aan Zee tournament» , — said Smagin.
«He has improved his athletic position, it seems to me that now Ian should be very pleased. He is quite capable of not only entering the top three, but also taking first place, because the group of leaders is very close, and he is only behind by half a point. Another thing is that the main thing for him is the upcoming Candidates Tournament,» the grandmaster added.
A tournament with the participation of eight top chess players for the right to play a match with the Chinese world champion Ding Liren will be held in April in Toronto.
