VIENNA, 19 JANThe wristwatch for which Arnold Schwarzenegger was detained at Munich airport while going through customs control was sold at an auction in Austria on Thursday evening for 270 thousand euros, Puls24 TV channel reported.
“The watch that caused Arnold Schwarzenegger problems with Munich customs was sold at auction on Thursday for 270 thousand euros,” noted the Austrian TV channel.
It is clarified that the Swiss Audemars Piguet watch was privately owned by the actor and its initial price at the auction was 50 thousand euros. According to the TV channel, the watch was designed specifically for Schwarzenegger and was released in a limited edition of 20 pieces worldwide.
It is noted that the deal took place on Thursday evening at a climate charity auction in the restaurant of the Stanglwirt Hotel, which is located in the Austrian resort village of Going.
The proceeds from the auction will go to the Schwarzenegger Climate Initiative, which annually hosts the Austrian World Summit in Vienna in May and supports various environmental projects. In addition to the watches, the auction included a painting of Schwarzenegger by Christoph Palashke, a painting of alpine skier Franz Klammer, exquisite whiskey, a concert from the Berlin musical group The BossHoss, a sword from the film “Conan the Barbarian,” personal training with a Hollywood star and other lots.
As Natasha Unger, press secretary of the Schwarzenegger Climate Initiative, told the Austrian news agency APA, all exhibits sold at the auction raised 1.31 million euros.
It was previously reported that the Hollywood star flew to Munich on Wednesday to further go to the World Climate Summit in Kitzbühel, Austria. He was wearing a wristwatch from the Swiss company Audemars Piguet, the cost of which was estimated by the owner at approximately 20 thousand euros. Because of them, the actor was detained while passing through customs.
As the Bild newspaper wrote, Schwarzenegger was thoroughly interrogated, after which they demanded that he pay 35 thousand euros: 26 thousand for the watch, four thousand in tax and five thousand in a fine. The situation was complicated by the fact that the actor had to pay half the cost in cash, which he did not have. As a result, the officer escorted Schwarzenegger to the bank branch. The actor himself tried to explain that he intended to sell the watch at a charity auction, but his arguments were not heard.
