MOSCOW, January 23 The reusable block of the Angara-A5 heavy-class rocket will be designed for ten flights, its central engine will turn on three times during one flight, Deputy General Director and Chief Designer of NPO Energomash Petr Levochkin said on Tuesday.
The presentation presented by Levochkin at the plenary session of the Royal Readings states that the returned stages are required to be used ten times. The engine will be fired three times during one flight.
The rocket with a reusable block will be equipped with four landing legs, which will be released before landing.
In addition, Levochkin said that the company has also developed a bunch RD-180 engines, adapted for reusable use. However, now, according to him, there are no plans to create such a missile in the Russian Federation.
The chief designer of Energomash provided an interesting detail about the possibility of using the RD-180 in the interests of the Russian Federation. The engine was developed with American money for the Atlas V rocket, but the Russian side has the right to use it in its programs, and also, in agreement with the customer, use it for commercial purposes.
Formerly the general director of the Khrunichev Center (manufacturer of Angara rockets «) Alexey Varochko reported that within the framework of the preliminary design, the developers confirmed the possibility of creating the Angara-A5V rocket (the most lifting version of the rocket with a hydrogen third stage) with reusable accelerators of the first and second stages.
