Russian Jumping Championships revealed a new mega-talent to the whole country – 12-year-old Elena Kostyleva, with whom link the future of Russian figure skating. How to overcome serious traumas in childhood, not to break down after being expelled from Eteri Tutberidze, but to love her at the same time – the child prodigy’s mother Irina Kostyleva told Sport in an interview.
“We were restoring the axel – we twisted our knee”< br>— It seems that the jumping championship was a real high point for Lena? Everyone finally saw what she was capable of.
– Not that word. Thank you very much for letting Lena participate. I just went up to our methodologist and asked: “Can I try to apply for Lena?” She agreed. As a result, she was selected to the list of participants, and I am very grateful to the federation. The only thing is that the organization was a little strange, we didn’t fully understand that we needed to jump.
But everything worked out anyway, even though we had a very long start period. She won the Moscow Cup and won the championship. Lena's personal tournament was late in the evening, at 22:30, and at 8 in the morning she was already at the CSKA Arena for training. That is, lack of sleep, moral overload… But I’m happy with how she showed herself. She’s not quite ready physically yet, she hasn’t fully recovered her ultra-si. But we will now work on this. Now there is no rush. This summer we rushed, and Lena got injured. We were restoring a triple axel without a fishing rod, and some vessel in the knee burst…
— Then they wrote about cartilage damage.
< br>– No, everything is fine with the cartilage. Lena jumped the axel without a fishing rod – it turned out to be under-rotated and her knee twisted. It blew up a huge hematoma 5×6 cm. As for the cartilage, the thing is that I don’t follow Lena’s social networks, I don’t control her. She is an absolutely free child in this regard. The only thing is that I ask that she not communicate with any men on the phone.
As a result, after that injury, she wanted to go on the ice at Moskvich within three days. The hematoma subsided a little, my knee felt better after physiotherapy, but I stopped it. You never know, God forbid, something happens to the same cartilage. Because of this, we first went to Rossosh for 3-4 weeks, were given complete peace, and in general Lena’s summer vacation turned into 1.5 months.
During this time, the hematoma resolved, and that’s all passed. Although this season for Lena, of course, turns out to be inferior. Last May, before the injury, she already had three ultra-cs! Clear, 10 out of 10 attempts in training. But we are in no hurry, Lena has everything ahead.
— A month and a half of downtime in figure skating is death.
– A lot, yes. Previously, she had a break of three weeks after Eteri Tutberidze, when she was injured, but so much… I remember filming her on the first day on the ice after rest – she had such emotions, she was so happy. No, for double jumps 1.5 months is normal, but for quadruple jumps it is very difficult. She is growing, this year she has grown by four centimeters, her jumps are a little more difficult to restore.
“You are arrogant, unscrupulous people, get out of here”< br>— Are you still actively involved in Lena’s training process?
– No, I don’t train her and don’t participate. She has coaches at Moskvich. I only join when we leave Moscow, for example, to Rossosh for a week, but we need to ride. If the coach is not available at that time, I push Lena a little to work. I don’t understand the technology in detail, I can only distinguish a large under-twist. This comes from observation, when you constantly watch all this from the side, but this is very little for full-fledged training.
Therefore, it is great stupidity when they say that I am training her. I'm just setting things up morally. Sometimes a child doesn’t want to work, and that’s normal. The parent’s task in this regard is to feed, equip and set up, so that he can then pass it on to the coach. This is what I do.
— Has the conflict situation with Moskvich been resolved?
– I think yes. Because Lena is their only athlete who has qualified for the Russian championship. Those athletes in whom the school invested a lot showed nothing. “Moskvich” has no chance – they are again represented by little Lenochka Kostyleva, who had two hours of ice time and not many comments from the coach.
br>Until the last week they didn’t give her anything, but when they realized that they only had Lena who was combat-ready at this level, something had to be done. The school has done a very good job with us during this period of time, we are very happy. I hope this will continue at least in the next month until the Russian Championship.
Last year, too, there were difficulties, albeit with less evil towards Lena. It’s just that I haven’t been involved in this kind of blogging before, but when we go out on the ice for the first time at Moskvich, we don’t know anyone yet, and Lena is already standing in the locker room in the third minute of training… At first I thought that something had happened to her skates or form. And she says: “Igor Aleksandrovich (Lyutikov) kicked me out, said that I was no longer training at Moskvich.” And I thought – well, how can it be, I’m still a member of the junior team, and put her out like that? I started to fight.< br>
When Tutberidze kicked us out for the first time, I said nothing. Silently took the skates and left without any scandals. The coach sent ***** (what for) from the board – they accepted, we left, we trained that same evening at Vadim Raevsky.
—Why didn’t you want to fight then?
— Lena got sick then. Then she entered the championship at the age of 8 with a triple Lutz, and fought against very strong girls – Gordeeva, Rubtsova, Titova, Dzepka. She performed well. I remember that we communicated very well with Arseny Fedotov’s dad. He also qualified for the championship at the age of eight, but he had neither a lutz nor a flip yet. And Arseny’s dad then said: “Your girl is even cooler than mine.”
But apparently the coaches didn’t like this very much, because they didn’t prepare her. While Lena was sick, she didn’t ride for ten days, her legs were shaking. Naturally, you can’t go to the championship in such a state. As a result, Lena and her dad went for a little extra skating – not to the cold Kommunarka, but to the warm skating rink in Lefortovo. After her illness, it was important for the girl to be warm on the ice. Well, since there are a lot of coaches there, they reported it all right away.
We have recovered and are on the ice. Then I bought Eteri Georgievna a beautiful gift, she was supposed to have a birthday soon… They didn’t give it back in the end because they kicked us out. Even before the choreography, Rozanov passed by us (coach Sergei, who worked in Tutberidze’s group), and gave such an angry look – I immediately understood everything. The training has begun, the parents are sitting upright against the wall, huddled together. Because everyone is afraid of Eteri Georgievna, it’s true. But she’s doing the right thing, you can’t give in any slack, otherwise people will start to get impudent. She called Lena over and asked her about something for 20 minutes. Then she called me over and said: “You and I are on different planets. You are arrogant, unscrupulous people, get out of here.”
— Just like that?

– Yes. We were shown a photograph of Lena on Raevsky’s “fishing rod”. I won’t lie, we hooked up with him in the summer, but before Eteri Georgievna. And already in August of the same year, Lena lost all her jumps. Everything that Lena came to Khrustalny with – all triples, great snipe – is gone. I had to ask him again to tell us what to do, because that school did not make any comments. Neither Rozanov nor Eteri Georgievna said anything.
— Rozanov is generally a strange figure.
– Well, in any case, he didn’t deal with Lena at all. Here is Sergei Viktorovich Dudakov – a great coach, when Rozanov and Tutberidze were not there, he coached Lena. I don’t know at all why Eteri Georgievna needed Lena in this case… But, in general, I said then that we were jumping, jumping and will jump. She turned around and left.
And when we came to Khrustalny for the second time, Eteri Georgievna said to my husband: “Your wife should fall at my feet and beg for me to bring you back.” In the hall, in front of all the parents! I never understood why. Brought such a girl!
— Is the confrontation with Eteri Georgievna now fundamental for you?
– No confrontation. I love her very much and respect her as a great coach. I wanted Lena to train with her, to step over herself in order to come to her a second time. Although we were not to blame for being kicked out.
— How do you feel about criticism on the Internet? Many people don’t like your harsh comments.
— You know, if we’re talking about the situation with yogurt, then I’ll only say that Margarita (Bazylyuk) deserved it. She cleared her way in this group by removing a beautiful, talented, jumping girl. God sees everything and will put everything in its place.
— From the outside it seems that Lena and you have serious ambitions in sports.
< br>—The point is that neither Lena nor I had any ambitions in sports. Lena is in poor health, we came to the skating rink simply because the doctor advised that it would be good for her to breathe cold air. She is a kind, cheerful child. The main thing is that she is healthy.
