MOSCOW, January 24 Documentary film director, creator of more than 100 documentaries and programs, member of the Union of Cinematographers Yuri Salnikov died at the age of 89, the Union of Cinematographers of the Russian Federation reported.
«At the age of 89, our friend and colleague, a member of the Union of Cinematographers of Russia, documentary film director Yuri Petrovich Salnikov, passed away… He worked in the creative association «Ekran» of Central Television, the main editorial office of Central Television propaganda, film and video studios «Sovinfilm», «Youth» and «DIK» are studios for documentary and feature films. For twenty-five years he worked at VGIK, where, together with Viktor Lisakovich and Alexei Gelein, he produced five workshops for documentary film directors,» says a statement on the union's website.
It is noted that Salnikov participated in the creation of more than 100 documentaries and television programs. The director's films have won awards at film festivals.
The Union of Cinematographers expressed condolences to Salnikov’s family and friends.
Yuri Salnikov was born on March 21, 1935 in the Omsk region. The director specialized in films about the North, the history of aviation and transpolar flights, and the history of astronautics. Among his works are such films as “Man Goes North”, “USSR — North Pole — USA: Half a Century Later”, “S.P. Korolev — Wernher von Braun: Duel of the Titans”, “Sputnik: Step into the Universe” and others .
