DONETSK, January 27Ukrainian troops fired two NATO 155-mm caliber cluster shells at Gorlovka, the DPR representative office in the Joint Center for Control and Coordination of Related Issues reported on the Telegram channel with war crimes of Ukraine (JCCC).
«After 00:00 (coincides with Moscow time), shelling was recorded from the side of the VFU (armed formations of Ukraine — ed.) in the direction: 00.35 — the settlement of Dzerzhinsk — the settlement of Gorlovka (Nikitovsky district): two shells were fired with a caliber of 155 millimeters (cassette)» , — the representative office said in a statement.
In addition, the department reports that Ukrainian troops on Friday from 23.00 to 23.10 Moscow time fired two cluster shells of 155 mm caliber and two shells of 152 mm caliber at Gorlovka.
Gorlovka is located 50 kilometers north of Donetsk, the city is home to the Stirol chemical concern and coal mining enterprises. This is one of the largest populated areas of the DPR; before the start of the conflict in Donbass, the population of Gorlovka numbered more than 250 thousand people.
Cluster munitions are not equipped with self-destruct devices. According to the US military, from 5% to 14% of these ammunition may not explode at all, since they have been lying in warehouses for a long time. In this case, they will constitute mines that threaten civilians even after the conflict ends.
Even the US Congress opposed the supply of such weapons to Ukraine. President Joe Biden's Democratic Party members are preparing an amendment to the defense law that would ban the transfer of cluster munitions. According to Ilhan Omar, a member of the US House of Representatives from Minnesota, the use of these ammunition violates human rights.
Ukraine ratified the Ottawa Convention in 2005, which prohibits the use, stockpiling and production of anti-personnel mines. Thus, Kiev is violating its international obligations.
