Putin noted the scientific contribution of major nuclear scientists from among the members of the Russian Academy of Sciences

MOSCOW, February 26 By his decree, Russian President Vladimir Putin awarded diplomas of honor and expressed gratitude to a number of prominent scientists from among the members of the Russian Academy of Sciences, including employees of the Sarov nuclear center.
According to the decree, all of them were noted for their great contribution to the development of domestic science, many years of fruitful activity and in connection with the 300th anniversary of the founding of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

The President's Certificate of Honor was awarded to the deputy scientific director of the Russian Federal Nuclear Center — the All-Russian Scientific Research Institute of Experimental Physics (RFNC-VNIIEF, Sarov, Nizhny Novgorod region), corresponding member of the RAS Alexander Chernyshev. The gratitude of the head of state was expressed to the outstanding developer of nuclear weapons, former director of the Sarov nuclear center, and now honorary scientific director of the RFNC-VNIIEF, academician Radiy Ilkaev.

In total, 10 people have now been awarded a certificate of honor and gratitude from the president, among whom, in particular, is a specialist in the field of semiconductors, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences Anatoly Dvurechensky and astrophysicist Academician Igor Novikov.
The works of Academician Ilkaev largely determined the appearance of modern nuclear weapons in Russia. The main ones relate to the development of primary sources of thermonuclear charges, charges of variable power, weapons with special damaging factors, ensuring the reliability and safety of nuclear weapons and research into the effects of damaging factors of a nuclear explosion. Ilkaev plays an exceptional role in shaping the modern scientific image of RFNC-VNIIEF.

Chernyshev's scientific interests include issues of nuclear physics and the effects of a nuclear explosion, physics of high energy densities and temperatures, and issues of nuclear non-proliferation.
RFNC-VNIIEF is part of the Rosatom nuclear weapons complex. The institute was founded in 1946 to implement the Soviet atomic project. The first domestic atomic and hydrogen bombs were developed here. Currently, VNIIEF is the largest scientific and technical center in Russia, which successfully solves defense, scientific and national economic problems. The main task of VNIIEF has been and remains work in the field of nuclear weapons in Russia. According to experts, the Sarov Nuclear Center ranks first among scientific institutes in terms of its contribution to Russia’s defense capability, ensuring the possibility of its existence as a strong, independent power.
