
YUZHNO-SAKHALINSK, March 24 An ash emission 2 kilometers high was recorded by specialists on Sunday at the Ebeko volcano on the Kuril island of Paramushir, the press service of the main department reports Ministry of Emergency Situations of Russia for the Sakhalin region.
«On the morning of March 24, an ash emission occurred at the Ebeko volcano to a height of 2 kilometers. The plume spread in a south-easterly direction over a distance of more than 5 kilometers,» the press service of the regional headquarters said.
According to dispatchers, no ash fall was observed in Severo-Kurilsk, the smell of hydrogen sulfide was not felt, and there is no threat to the population. The equipment did not detect exceeding the maximum permissible concentration for volcanic gases.
Ebeko Volcano, 1156 meters high, is located on Paramushir Island, seven kilometers northwest of Severo-Kurilsk in the northern part of the Vernadsky Ridge. Regular emissions (from weak to moderate) have been ongoing since October 20, 2016, which is normal activity for the volcano. The record emission was registered on August 31, 2018. Then a column of smoke rose to a height of six kilometers from a new volcanic crater formed in 2017.
