MOSCOW, March 20 Theater director Rimas Tuminas was buried on Wednesday at the Antakalnis cemetery in Vilnius, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda was present at the farewell, reported the LRT portal (Lithuanian Radio and TV).
Tuminas died on March 6 at the age of 73 in a hospital in Italy.
LRT reported that the urn with the director’s ashes was exhibited in the central building of the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theater, then in the Vilnius Small Theater he created, and then was moved to the Lithuanian National Drama Theater, which Tuminas directed in 1995-1999.
«Various public figures and the theater community came to say goodbye to Rimas Tuminas. President Gitanas Nausėda also came, appreciating the director’s contribution to the development of the Lithuanian theater,» the message says. The director was buried in the artists' section of the largest Antakalnis cemetery in Vilnius.
Rimas Tuminas was born on January 20, 1952 in the city of Kelme (Lithuania). He graduated from the directing department of GITIS, after which he worked in theaters in Vilnius and Moscow. Tuminas has staged productions abroad, in particular in Finland, Iceland, Sweden, and Poland. In 1990, he founded and headed the Vilnius Maly Theater. In 2007, the director became artistic director of the Vakhtangov Theater.
He left Russia for Lithuania until 2022. Tuminas has been the artistic director of the Yevgeny Vakhtangov Theater since 2007; he left this position on May 6, 2022.
