On the eve of the opening of the New York Auto Show, Mercedes-Benz once again presented an updated frame SUV G-Class. So far only “hydrocarbon” versions are presented, the premiere of the long-promised all-electric “Gelika” will take place later this year.
The legendary Mercedes Geländewagen dates back to 1979; it underwent its last major update in 2018 — it was so large-scale (independent front suspension, rack and pinion steering, new frame, new body panels, new interior, new engines, new electronics) that was quite drawn to the next generation, but Mercedes-Benz fundamentally left the SUV with the W463 index, assigned to it in the early 1990s, when the G-Class began to acquire the status of a cult car.

Meanwhile, in connection with the “Gelik” of the 2025 model year, the official press release contains the expression all-new, that is, “completely new”, dozens of times, although now this is just a routine restyling with a number of targeted changes and improvements. There are few external changes, since the design of the G-Class has long been canonical, no one is going to radically change it.

The main features of the updated G-Class are new bumpers (the front one has become larger and rounded) and a new radiator grille with four horizontal slats instead of the previous three. The top-end Mercedes-AMG G 63 has the same grille, with vertical bars; the updated body can be identified by large vertical bars in the side sections of the front bumper (previously they were horizontal). Well, and, as usual, the design of the wheels has been updated (from 18 to 22 inches).

There are also purely functional changes: new facings on the A-pillars and a small spoiler above the windshield slightly improved the aerodynamic characteristics of the body and reduced the noise level when driving. A camera with a washer appeared on the rear bumper above the license plate. A camera on the front bumper in combination with cameras on the mirrors made it possible to implement the “transparent” hood function, when the driver sees the situation in the area of the front wheels on the screen. For an additional fee, various useful accessories from the Professional Line are offered — for example, an expeditionary trunk and a ladder to it, protective grilles for headlights, developed mud flaps and “toothy” tires.

The interior has also not changed fundamentally, but it is easy to identify with the new corporate-wide steering wheel with touch-sensitive claw spokes (a rather dubious acquisition, it must be said). The climate control unit has also been redesigned (it has just become more convenient) and the differential control unit: all three keys have been preserved, but have decreased in size, as they have been replaced by two added service keys — the top one activates the off-road mode of the two-screen display of the MBUX system.

The size of the display has not changed (two 12.3-inch screens), but the graphics and firmware have been updated, and the functionality has been expanded: in particular, navigation tips can now be superimposed on a live image of the area on the screen — augmented reality, so to speak. Passengers in the second row can order their own 11.6-inch multimedia screens: the point is that content can literally be swiped from one multimedia screen to another, including the one in the front part of the cabin — probably a “carousel” for some will bring pleasure.

The G-Class's hardware is essentially the same, but adaptive shock absorbers are now standard equipment. Standard ground clearance is 241 mm, approach angle is 31 degrees, departure angle is 30 degrees, ramp angle is 26 degrees, fording depth is 700 mm. The center differential is asymmetrical; by default, it sends 60% of the power to the rear wheels, 40% to the front. The clutch that blocks the center differential operates in automatic mode and smoothly adjusts the degree of blocking, but there is also a forced full blocking. Inter-wheel differential locks are only forced. The transfer case, of course, has a reduction gear — 2.93. The standard brake discs are quite large: the front diameter is 354 mm, the rear diameter is 345 mm. The Mercedes-AMG G 63 has even more powerful brakes and a sports suspension with optional active roll control.

The petrol Mercedes-Benz G 500, as previously announced, has lost its V8 engine and is now content with 3.0-liter in-line gasoline “six” with combined supercharging, its output is 449 hp. and 560 Nm plus 20 hp. and 200 Nm from the starter-generator. In the North American market, the G 500 version bears the index G 550 — this is how it happened historically.
Sports Mercedes -AMG G 63, fortunately, is still equipped with a 4.0-liter V8 biturbo petrol engine, its output is 585 hp. and 850 Nm plus unchanged 20 hp. and 200 Nm from the starter-generator. The Mercedes-AMG G 63 with the optional AMG Performance package accelerates to 100 km/h in 4.3 seconds, with a top speed of 240 km/h.
In Europe, the basic diesel Mercedes-BenzG 450 d will cost from 122,808 euros, prices for other versions have not yet been disclosed.
