The Citroen Basalt cross-coupe will become another affordable analogue of the Renault Arkana

The new SUV is designed for emerging markets. The design is the same for all regions, but the technology will vary. The five-door will go on sale in the second half of the year.

The coupe-like SUV Citroen Basalt, announced a couple of days ago, turned out to be a concept with the “surname” Vision. However, the five-door can be considered pre-production — the conveyor cross will not differ much from it. In addition, Citroen has already announced that the commercial coupe will retain the Basalt name. Let us remind you that this SUV will be the third model of the C-Cubed project, conceived specifically for poor markets: Basalt will join the C3 hatchback and the C3 Aircross crossover (not to be confused with the models of the same name for Europe). The production of the cross-coupe will be established in India and Brazil — the rest of the public sector is also produced there.

As expected, the front part of the Citroen Basalt shares with the platform Citroen C3 Aircross, the only difference is in the decor. Well, a version with LED headlights has also been announced for the cross-coupe. The rear, of course, is original: the coupe-shaped SUV has its own tailgate, lights and bumper. In terms of dimensions, the Basalt is probably comparable to the C3 Aircross. The length of the latter (in Brazilian specification) is 4320 mm, the wheelbase is 2675 mm.

The interior has not yet been shown. Most likely, inside the Basalt will also be unified with its related hatch and “traditional” SUV, that is, the model will receive a similar front panel with vertical air deflectors on the sides, the same digital instrument panel and a large tablet multimedia system.

The technology will vary depending on the market, but all the hardware will, of course, be carried over from the C3 Aircross. Thus, in India, the Citroen Basalt will be offered with a 1.2 petrol turbo engine producing 110 hp. in combination with a six-speed manual or classic automatic. And in Brazil, the SUV will receive a three-cylinder 1.0 turbo engine from Fiat, which traditionally for this country runs on both gasoline (125 hp) and ethanol (130 hp), where the model will be equipped with a CVT. All cars in the C-Cubed family have front-wheel drive only.

The Citroen Basalt will go on sale in the second half of this year. In Latin American countries, the main competitor of the cross-coupe will be its “colleague” from the Stellantis concern – Fiat Fastback. In addition, in some Latin American markets, the new Citroen product will be a more affordable alternative to the Renault Arkana (this Arkana is different from the Russian defunct model). In India, Basalt will compete with Tata Curvv.
