More on Andy Murray's return on The playing field remains in doubt after he withdrew from the next two scheduled tournaments in Monte Carlo and Munich, but said nothing about any medical intervention.
Murray tore two ankle ligaments on Sunday joint in Miami. during his latest three-and-a-half-hour epic, this time against Tomas Machac of the Czech Republic.
Experts suggest that surgery will be a last resort and that Murray will likely be able to compensate for damaged ligaments by building up other ankle muscles instead.
A message from Murray's management on Friday indicated that he will indeed do so. opted for a more conservative option — rest, rehab and recovery rather than surgery — but gave no indication as to the likely date of his return.
“After consultation with his team and medical experts, Andy Murray has made the decision to skip the Rolex Monte Carlo Masters and BMW Open in Munich,” the statement said.
“It's still unclear at this stage. how long Andy will be out of action and he continues to review his options with his medical team. This is obviously very disappointing news for Andy and he reiterated his desire to return to the court as soon as possible. He thanks all his fans for their kind words of support and will continue to update everyone as the situation develops.”
Murray's latest injury threatens to derail the planned grand finale to his career. While he didn't name the exact tournament he would end up in, he said a month ago: «I probably won't be playing this summer.»
Wimbledon is the clear priority in the final round, although Murray could also consider a visit to Paris in July if he feels he can win a fourth Olympic medal there.< /p>
Immediately after his defeat by Machak, he spoke as if he had come to terms with his imminent departure. «Now I'm looking forward to the end,» he told reporters, «doing the best I can for the next few months and then being home with my family.»
