Shakira expressed her opinion about the Barbie movie
Shakira said the Barbie movie could be seen as «emasculating» for young boys and that she believes women should be empowered «without denying men the opportunity to be men.»
The 47-year-old Colombian pop superstar was asked about watching the Greta Gerwig-directed film Barbieland, in which Barbieland is controlled by women , until Mattel dolls test patriarchy by entering the real world in a comedy film.
Shakira told Allure magazine: “My sons didn’t like it at all. They thought it was humiliating, and I agree with that to a certain extent. I am raising two boys. I want [them] to feel strong too, [while] respecting women.
“I love pop culture when it tries to empower women without stripping men of their ability to be men and protect and provide.< /p>
“I believe in giving women all the tools and believing in that we can do all this without losing our essence, without losing our femininity. I think men have a purpose in society and women have another purpose.
“We complement each other and that complement should not be lost. Just because a woman can do it all doesn't mean she should do it.
“Why not share the burden with people who deserve to bear it, who also have a responsibility to bear it?”
