BMW M4 and 4 series may not have internal combustion engine successors

It is possible that the next generation will be represented by coupes and convertibles only with all-electric “filling”. The basis will probably be the Neue Klasse platform.

The history of the BMW 4 series began in 2013: then the Bavarian company decided to separate the two-door modifications of the three-room car into a separate family. Let us remind you that the second generation fourth series cars were presented in 2020. The coupe and convertible have “hot” versions of the M4, the BMW M division is responsible for their development. At the end of January of this year, all two-door models underwent an update. In the future, the model will undergo a generation change, however, who exactly will get to the “new start” is not yet clear.

According to BMW Blog, “the 4 series is not expected to receive a new generation.” The publication also states that there will be no new generation model on the CLAR platform and with internal combustion engines. However, this does not mean that the family will sink into oblivion: apparently, the next generation will be represented by all-electric BMW i4 coupes and convertibles, as well as their “hot” versions, which, according to rumors, may retain their current name – M4.

It is expected that the next generation of completely “green” two-doors will be based on the new modular Neue Klasse platform. Previously, the company has already presented a show car of the same name, which is presumably a prototype of the new generation BMW 3 series sedan. Most recently, the Vision Neue Klasse X concept crossover, based on the same electric car, debuted. Probably, based on this show car, a new “green” BMW iX3 SUV will subsequently be created.

There are still very few details about the technology of previously presented concepts on the Neue Klasse platform. It is known that all representatives of the new “green” family will receive sixth-generation eDrive electrical equipment with an 800-volt architecture. Earlier it became known that future serial new products will have an increased range on a single charge by 30%, and energy efficiency by 25% (compared to current “green” versions.

According to the publication, the current BMW M4 and 4 series with internal combustion engines will be produced until June 2028. Let us remind you that they come off the assembly line at the BMW plant in Dingolfing (Germany). In July of the same year, production of the new BMW i4 will probably start.

Recall that the current BMW 4 Series coupe and convertible are equipped with 2.0-liter gasoline and diesel turbo engines operating in tandem with 48 -Volt “electro-weight” as part of a mild-hybrid power plant. The range includes two four-cylinder petrol engines with 184 and 245 hp, as well as a 190 hp four-cylinder diesel. Drive – rear or all-wheel drive. And the BMW 430d xDrive has a six-cylinder diesel engine with 286 hp under the hood.

U performance BMW M440i 3.0-liter six-cylinder in-line gasoline engine producing 374 hp. (500 Nm); the M440d has a six-cylinder 340-horsepower diesel engine of the same volume (700 Nm). All variants are equipped with an eight-speed Steptronic automatic transmission.

In turn, the “charged” coupe and convertible in the top Competition M xDrive versions have an in-line six-cylinder engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology, maximum performance which is equal to 530 hp. The starting versions of the M4 with a six-speed manual have a power of 480 hp, and the rear-wheel drive versions of the BMW M4 Competition with an 8-speed automatic transmission have 510 hp.
