MOSCOW, April 6The Russian manufacturer of ultra-long-range sniper rifles Lobaev Arms has begun work on creating a turret to protect armored vehicles from Ukrainian FPV drones; a prototype of this system is currently being tested, said the head of the company, Vladislav Lobaev.
“Today Lobaev Arms is creating a complex for protecting our armored combat vehicles from Ukrainian FPV drones of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. This topic is not “traditional” for the enterprise, but we cannot stand aside, given that the use of such drones by the enemy today represents one one of the main dangers at the front,” he said.
The agency’s interlocutor emphasized that the decision to create an anti-drone gun is related to the need to find an asymmetric and at the same time cost-effective response to the threat of Ukrainian FPV devices. “Today we cannot tolerate a situation where a tank costing several million dollars can disable a UAV worth, in our money, 40 thousand rubles,” Lobaev said.
Among the advantages of this anti-drone system, Lobaev Arms named its compactness and speed of deployment, which takes only three minutes, including potentially on an armored vehicle. This system is a rotating robotic turret, which is supposed to be installed on armored vehicles. The caliber of the gun, which is being tested today, is 12 and rifled 7.62×39 mm, as well as 5.56x45mm, however, during the work, the appearance of the complex, caliber and number of barrels may change.
“In this work, we have so far deliberately moved away from any specific tactical and technical characteristics. The resulting product can be greatly modified. The final system can be two-, five-, or even six-barreled, and a combination of smooth and rifled barrels is possible “, Lobaev said.
Modern FPV drones pose a great danger to military personnel on the battlefield. They are used for electronic and optoelectronic reconnaissance, distraction of radar equipment and missile systems during an air attack. FPV drones can be equipped with special devices for hanging ammunition and, thanks to secure communication channels, are resistant to electronic warfare.
Specializing in the production of civilian and service sniper weapons, Lobaev Arms (Tarusa, Kaluga region) is the first private defense enterprise in the history of Russia. One of the most famous sniper rifles developed by the company is the “Twilight” – the longest-range weapon of this class in the world today (the maximum range of hitting a target during “record” shooting is 4 kilometers).
