MOSCOW, April 6, Vlad Zhukov. International Skating Union ( The ISU will discuss the issue of legalizing somersaults in figure skating programs, a source familiar with the situation said.
According to the source, a discussion of this issue should take place in the near future. The inspiration for the change was the two-time European champion from France, Adam Xiao Him Fa, who has repeatedly performed somersaults this season. In December, the skater said in an interview that thanks to this he wants to help “go beyond some restrictions.”
As the source noted, the corresponding proposal should be made by the ISU technical committee of singles and pairs skating to the organization's congress, which will be held from June 10 to 14 in Las Vegas. However, since this proposal was not on the preliminary agenda of the congress (it was introduced later), its inclusion requires the approval of an overwhelming majority of delegates.
At the same time, as the source notes, the proposal is “highly likely” to end up on the agenda.
Currently, performing somersaults in programs is punishable by two penalty points. Moreover, this element, in addition to the Frenchman, is owned by many athletes, among whom, in particular, are Russians Dmitry Aliev and Andrey Yezhlov.
