Tinkoff Business Study: How Russians Pay and Businesses Accept Payments

Tinkoff Business, as part of the Tinkoff Data analytical project, conducted a study of the popularity of different methods of accepting payments in retail business, including payments with bank cards at the terminal, using a QR code or using the Pay to phone application on a smartphone .

Calculations were carried out based on data on payment transactions of more than 40 million individual clients and turnover of Tinkoff business clients in 33 categories of retail business from January 2023 to February 2024.

Half of offline retail entrepreneurs use two or more payment methods

At the beginning of 2023, 86% of offline retail entrepreneurs used only one method of accepting non-cash payments – by applying a bank card1 to a terminal at a point of sale. Only 3%, as the only method of receiving payments, connected payment in stores using a QR code via SBP or the Pay to phone2 application, with which a smartphone is used as a payment terminal.

However, at the beginning of 2023, there were also those who used two or more methods of accepting payments at retail outlets at once—11% of retail companies. By the end of February 2024, among entrepreneurs trading offline, 52% of retail businesses had already connected two or more methods of accepting payments.

Customers’ demand to pay for purchases using a QR code

At the end of February 2024, every second Russian (55%) paid for their purchases using a QR code at least once a month. Every fifth customer using a QR code pays for more than 10 purchases in a month using this method. A year after starting to use a QR code, 66% of buyers continue to pay for purchases using this method.

The share of payments by QR code among all retail purchases paid for using various payment methods increased from 2% in January 2023 to 8% in February 2024. The monthly volume of purchases using QR codes over the same period increased from 5% to 14% of the total volume of spending made by retail customers using various payment methods.

In 2023, shoppers made 5 times more purchases using a QR code than in 2022, and 53 times more compared to 2021. In 2023, the turnover of payments via QR code was 4 times higher than last year, and 15 times higher than in 2021.

According to the artificial intelligence service for analytics and forecasting ETNA from Tinkoff, from December 2023 to July 2024, both the number of purchases and the turnover of payments via QR code will increase by another 1 .5 times (or 50%).

Payments via QR code in comparison with other payment methods

In February 2024, the largest shares in the number of purchases using a QR code among all methods of accepting payments fall on the following categories:
