Mercedes-Benz has decided to update its flagship electric liftback EQS exactly three years after its debut, as sales leave much to be desired. It is curious that the corrected design and the new battery did not lead to an increase in the price of the EQS, because it was too expensive even before the restyling.
We highlighted the unenviable market position of the Mercedes-Benz EQS last week in light of the emergence of information that this model will have a second generation — it is expected in 2028 and, most likely, will change its name. The second generation will be completely different from the first: the fish-shaped design, which was decisively rejected by the conservative public, will be replaced by a model with a more traditional, vertically oriented design, but the “first” EQS needs to somehow survive until 2028.

The concept, by the way, was warmly received by the public, but the production electric car turned out to be much less elegant and more heavy: the proportions have changed, the body pillars are thicker, the wheels are smaller — in general, everything is as usual, a rare concept reaches the assembly line in its original form.
The EQS is selling much worse than Mercedes-Benz market analysts expected: for example, in the United States last year it sold 6,688 units, which is 11% less than sales in 2022 (data from the manufacturer). In Europe, sales of EQS last year dropped by 46% to 3,708 units. (data from JATO Dynamics). Of course, the global slowdown in demand for electric vehicles had its impact, but the situation of the Mercedes-Benz EQS was aggravated by the specific design and uncomfortable touch ergonomics — it was on this model that the giant monolithic MBUX Hyperscreen display made its debut across the entire width of the front panel. The reputation of the electric flagship is also spoiled by a record drop in price on the secondary market: the EQS loses half of its value in the first year of operation. In general, it is not surprising that the management of Mercedes-Benz decided not to increase the starting price for the EQS; in Germany it now costs from 109,551 euros.

The restyling of the Mercedes-Benz EQS turned out to be quite modest and concentrated entirely on the front end: at the “numerous requests of workers,” the dotted pattern on the blank panel between the headlights gave way to a painted grille with three horizontal slats and one vertical; the front of the EQS now resembles a classic Mercedes. The large Mercedes-Benz emblem disappeared from the panel between the headlights, but a classic “sight” with a three-pointed star appeared above it — not aerodynamic, but with status.

The EQS is now available with a Rear Comfort Package Plus, which improves comfort in the second row, including extendable rear footrests and increased seat adjustment ranges to allow passengers to sit in a reclining position. For an additional fee, extended seat heating is also offered (heat is supplied to the neck and shoulders), seat depth adjustment using pneumatic chambers and backlighting of the front seats. And for particularly luxury-hungry customers, there is a special Manufaktur Selection with exclusive colors, exclusive 21-inch wheel design and exclusive interior trim.

The main technical innovation is the new battery: the capacity has increased from 108.4 to 118 kWh, the range on one charge in the WLTP cycle has increased from 635-717 km to 683-822 km, depending on the modification. The permissible towed trailer weight for twin-engine all-wheel drive versions has increased from 750 to 1,700 kg.
Next year, the EQS, according to insiders, will move from 400-volt to 800-volt electrical architecture and will receive Mercedes-Benz's own electric motors instead of the current ones from Valeo.

A restyled Mercedes is on sale Benz EQS will appear on April 25 following its live premiere at the Beijing Auto Show. Meanwhile, the main premiere of Mercedes-Benz in Beijing will not be the updated EQS, but the electric version of the G-Class SUV.
The Mercedes-Benz brand is now losing ground in China and does not yet know how to fix it . In the first quarter of this year in China, according to the company itself, 168,900 Mercedes-Benz passenger cars were sold, which is 12% less than sales in January-March 2023. Global sales of Mercedes-Benz passenger cars during the same period fell by 8% to 463,000 units, of which electric vehicles accounted for 47,500 units. (-8%).
