Angela Rayner's neighbors have not been contacted It has emerged that police are reconsidering a decision not to investigate claims that she may have broken election laws.
Labour's deputy leader was reported to Greater Manchester Police James Daly, Conservative MP, over concerns she may have committed crimes. a crime committed in the early 2010s by providing false information about where she lived.
The force said in March that Ms Rayner would not be investigated.
However, following Mr Daly's complaint that officers appeared to have failed to contact witnesses or review electoral rolls, deeds and other relevant documents, GMP later announced it would reconsider its decision.
When The Telegraph contacted neighbors in the two streets where Ms Rayner owned property, no one had been contacted by police about the allegations.
Although some residents had moved out, some were still living there at the relevant time, and no one spoke to detectives about the allegations.The police investigation is focused on the fact that if Rayner was on the electoral roll in the property property, she could have committed a crime if she was living in her husband's home at the time.
Under election rules, voters are expected to register at their permanent address.
Neighbors Previously stated that they were adamant that she had lived “full-time” in his terraced house for about six years.
A Greater Manchester Police spokesman said: “We have received a complaint about our decision not to investigate the allegation and are in the process of re-evaluating that decision.”
“The complainant will be informed of the outcome of the investigation. re-evaluation in due course.”
The story, which appeared in an unauthorized biography of former Tory peer Lord Ashcroft, led to calls from Ms Rayner asking her to explain why she had failed to pay capital gains tax of up to £1,500 on her Vicarage Road property when she sold it in March 2015.
The book claimed she bought the house for £79,000 using the Right to Buy scheme in January 2007.
She had paid her bills and council tax and was registered to vote at this address. If it had been her main residence, she would have been exempt when she sold it in March 2015 for £127,500.
However, there were claims that she primarily lived in the house about a mile away from the house. away in Lowndes Lane after marrying Mark Rayner in 2010.
The Conservative Party demanded Ms Rayner publish the tax advice she said she had received, but it still refused to do this.
She said she was willing to pass on this information if necessary to either HM Revenues & Customs or the police.
Ms Rayner has previously said the scandal was fabricated to «smear» her ahead of Labour's likely general election victory.
Working in Stockport where she lived Ms Rayner, falls under the jurisdiction of the Greater Manchester Combined Authority.
Mayor Andy Burnham and Deputy Mayor Keith Green act as effective Police and Crime Commissioners (PCC) for the area.
The PCC's role is to be «the voice of the people and hold the police to account.» .
They have been contacted for comment on the ongoing police review.
Straight answers needed
On Wednesday, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak demanded that Sir Keir Starmer and Ms Rayner give «straightforward answers» » answers to controversial questions.
It also emerged that Ms Rayner wrote to Amanda Milling, the then Conservative Party chair, in 2021 during the Hartlepool election campaign about the Conservative Party candidate's husband spending time in the Cayman Islands.
She wrote: «I am writing to you for the second time in as many days to express serious concerns about the Conservative Party's campaign in the Hartlepool by-election.
«Your candidate Jill Mortimer is reported to have spent time living in a tax haven , where her ex-husband worked as a banker. Mrs Mortimer had already admitted that she 'didn't spend much time' in Hartlepool.'
She then asked Mr and Mrs Mortimer a series of questions about their finances, which they had to answer.
“Have they received any tax advantages from living there – and has she or he advised others about the tax advantages of settling or living in the Cayman Islands?”
“In the interests of transparency, will you now publish a full account of Jill Mortimer's time in the Cayman Islands? Will you also order Jill Mortimer to release her tax returns for this period in full?
