Electronic warfare troops talked about the use of neural networks in drones

MOSCOW, April 15 Neural networks will soon be used in UAVs to recognize objects and transition from flying along a predetermined route to autonomous execution of tasks, as well as in order to ensure the actions of drones in the form of a self-organizing group, said the head of the electronic warfare troops (EW) of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, Lieutenant General Yuri Lastochkin in an interview with the Krasnaya Zvezda newspaper.
Electronic Warfare Specialist Day is celebrated in Russia on Monday, April 15. The memorable date was established on the basis of the decree of the President of Russia of May 31, 2006 “On the establishment of professional holidays and memorable days in the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation.”

“Neural networks are actively being introduced into decision support systems at various levels of control. In electronic warfare systems on UAVs, in the near future, neural networks will be used for automatic recognition of objects directly on board, transition from flight along a predetermined route to autonomous execution of tasks, as well as for ensuring the actions of UAVs in the form of a self-organizing group,” he said.

Lastochkin emphasized that special software for electronic warfare systems uses AI technologies to solve a wide range of problems, from primary signal processing to pattern recognition in all information fields.
According to him, the use of such technologies in electronic warfare technology makes it possible to select with maximum speed the optimal types and parameters of interference necessary to suppress radio-electronic equipment. Lastochkin also emphasized that not a single new development work on the creation of electronic warfare equipment and systems begins without a preliminary analysis of the possibility of using artificial intelligence technologies in it.
“We can say with confidence that in the near future these technologies will make it possible to bring the processes of managing electronic warfare forces and means to a qualitatively new level, as well as to increase the efficiency of their use,” Lastochkin added.
