MOSCOW, April 18 Head coach of the Nizhny Novgorod club of the Continental Hockey League (KHL) “Torpedo” Igor Larionov said that he managed to improve the atmosphere in the team, getting rid of “toxic” people during the season.
This season, Torpedo left the Gagarin Cup in the first round of the playoffs, losing to SKA St. Petersburg in the series with a score of 1-4.
«We are following a slightly different path than other clubs. We do not buy (players), but develop them. New names give hope that we are doing many things correctly. There were some minor problems during the season, we made adjustments, removed toxic people from team. Maybe a little later than we should have, but we did it. There is always a fire inside that is very difficult to extinguish. If it goes out, you need to end this profession, promises and hopes. It is very important that every player has a dream inside.» , — Larionov said at a press conference following the season, the broadcast of which was published on the Torpedo YouTube channel.
Larionov has been heading Torpedo since 2022. During his playing career, he won two Olympics (1984, 1988), four World Championships (1982, 1983, 1986, 1989), a Canada Cup (1981), eight USSR championships (1982-1989) and three Stanley Cups (1997, 1998, 2002). After finishing his playing career, he worked as the head coach of the Russian youth and Olympic national teams.
