Scientists have found out what skills a modern teacher should have

MOSCOW, April 18The universal competencies that a modern teacher must have for successful work were identified by scientists of the Presidential Academy (Samara branch). University staff studied the requirements of employers for the teaching staff of secondary schools and determined what skills are expected from young specialists, this was reported in the press service of the branch.
To determine the key requirements, the academy’s specialists analyzed data from 255 schools in three pilot regions of the country, having different economic status.
“We conducted an online survey of the heads of educational organizations of the Samara and Yaroslavl regions, the Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug. In total, 186 school directors (73%) and 69 deputies (27%) were covered,” said the candidate of pedagogical sciences, director of the Presidential Academy (Samara branch) Victoria Prudnikova.

The results showed that all school leaders pay particular attention to candidates' ability to learn. In their opinion, a young teacher should be able to understand what knowledge he lacks, independently find sources of missing information, assess their reliability and only then extract the necessary data from them.

Also included in the list of necessary universal competencies is the ability to control and manage oneself and others. Experts noted that in this regard, the requirements for graduates of pedagogical universities are higher than for graduates of pedagogical colleges.
Another important skill in professional activity, highlighted during the study, was effective communication of the future teacher (the ability to explain material, communicate with parents , resolve conflicts in the classroom, and interact with colleagues), both verbally and in writing.

The surveyed employers also believe that graduates Pedagogical educational institutions of all levels are required to correctly evaluate the results of the work done, including methodological developments and completed documents.

The study was conducted in January-February 2024 and was aimed at studying employers’ requests for universal skills and abilities of teachers with higher education. The authors noted that employers’ requests for the universal competencies of teachers with higher education are quite homogeneous and do not depend on the specifics of the socio-economic development of the region, the location of schools in urban or rural areas, or the number of students.

The university reported that work on the project continues. In the future, it will be necessary to assess the level of proficiency of the described competencies of current teachers and graduates of pedagogical universities, as well as formulate proposals for professional development and basic training of future teachers.
