MOSCOW, April 26. PJSC VimpelCom (Beeline brand) has implemented an automated solution for calculating the carbon footprint of the infrastructure used by IT applications within the company, the operator reports.
“For teams developing IT applications, it is important to evaluate the complex impact of many factors when designing: not only the optimization of server capacity and energy consumption, but also how they contribute to the environmental situation. Following the development strategy of the company’s own IT landscape, we are actively transferring the operation of applications to the cloud. At the same time, it is important for us to ensure the observability of the above-mentioned parameters for developers and provide them with an analysis and forecasting tool, taking into account the choice of a particular architectural solution by teams,” noted the Deputy General Director. , Beeline information technology block Anton Rubenchik, whose words are quoted in the message.
Calculations are based on data on electricity consumption by server equipment, taking into account regional greenhouse gas emission factors from network electricity and heat, determined by the territorial method. The emission factors were calculated by experts on climate risks and greenhouse gases.
As noted in the message, monitoring the carbon footprint will allow the company to develop and implement measures to improve energy efficiency and implement green infrastructure solutions.
“At the moment, developers have already been able to predict the carbon footprint, the calculation of which is based on average indicators of electricity consumption. In turn, these indicators are calculated based on a model designed by the team developing the cloud platform,” the company reported.
The immediate plans include the introduction of models into the observability platform to make calculations based on monitoring actual data and tracking the dynamics of growth or decline in emissions indicators.
